  • Gushing Shot?

    Hi all
Any ideas about a shot that starts beautifully, 6-7 seconds after starting, then gushes 3-4 seconds into the pour? 8-10 goes this morning with different grinds, tamps etc - what does it sound like?

    Have a great weekend!

Sounds like your dose is too low.

I think I sorted it out... The grind was too coarse. Ive just started using a Macap, and the markings on the machine are kind of a double negative - hard to work out what way was finer! (not toward the fine end of the scale, but in the direction the fine end pointed to - which is a decrease in numbers!) Very confusing... but got a good shot then.

      Thanks muchly!

Macap markings are death! I hate them haha. Have made the same mistake before dude, easily done on the Macaps.

Youre not wrong! Im tempted to cover up ALL markings and write on the side in texta "For a finer grind just turn clockwise!". How hard is it!
          Those zany Italian designers!

On my Macap, clockwise = coarser.

Mine is the same Fatboy with the higher the number the finer the grind but the numbers are along an arrow that goes from thick to thin with higher numbers as it gets thinner.

To me it was self explanitory but still took a little used to when i changed from a 14 year old braun grinder.

Ditto for the vast majority of commercial quality grinders I would say....

                    Re: Gushing Shot?

Mines the Macap Micrometric - you turn the screw (worm gear) on the right hand side clockwise, the main crown wheel therefore turns anit-clockwise, which decreases the numbers, and fines up the grind! Bizarre! But the manual does say that the stepped grinder you just turn anti-clockwise..... go figure! (but it does work, no matter how odd!). My shots are much improved!

I was referring to the Upper Burr Carrier DBC, sorry about that... :-[

This was all covered in the Macap post/s in the Grinders section at the time they were first introduced just over a year ago
I uploaded the manual M4D for the poor souls that did not have one placed in the box

                          Anyway enough of that :
The Macap is a great grinder when you learn to drive it (beep beep)
