  • Best excuses to buy a coffee machine?

    Fellow CSers,

Have you ever felt a burning desire to buy a fancy new coffee machine but couldnt quite convince your partner to buy into the idea?

This is my current predicament and Im looking for excuses! For example, "I know we have a baby on the way, honey, but dont you agree a caffeinated daddy make a good, happy daddy?"

Im pretty sure that wont fly so I could use some help here... please help me come up with some creative excuses  :

You could say its your new hobby and compare it to something like the cost of golf and it wont take you away from the family all weekend. ;D I find the lure of the ultimate hot chocolate would convince many of the opp sex.

Given you have a baby on the way, you definitely *Definitely* need to get an espresso machine. With all the sleep deprivation youre about to go through, its simply survival.

As a coffee snob & I am hungry for the upgrade or purchase then
        I see it
I track it down & if I can afford it
I hunt it till it gives up
And go for the kill and buy it

        Simple no excuses
You need a one track mind

Ditto...you dont have to convince anyone with good excuses and if you do have to convince yourself with such talk, then I usually find myself fairly accommodating... ;D

Best of luck with both from me too, caffeinated squirrel...

Re: Best excuses to buy a coffee machine?

Its often easier to beg forgiveness than seek approval, although Im sure that was coined by someone after a bitter divorce......

You need to create the need first -

Add up the cost of buying coffees, this can be pretty easy to exagerate $4 each, twice a day, thats $56 a week or $ 2.8k per year, look honey, the machine and grinder "only" cost X $. Then throw in the "yuck, they charge this much for dish water crap" as often as you can, pointing out that a home machine will make much better coffee much cheaper.

Plus, a machine that he/she can use when the girls / lads are around. Like many things that women (or men) dont "get" about their partners obsessions, they are equally quite happy to show them off / brag about it to their friends (we dont go out for coffee anymore, we get too dissapointed as we get far better at home).

If you already have a machine, create some doubt about its abilities / reliability.

Google can be your friend here, as regardless of what make / model your current machine is, you are bound to find a forum thread somwehere on this planet that is full of "problems" with the machine. Or "it takes sooo long to make milk coffees having to wait for the steam to get up to power" etc, it takes me away from you / our friends for too long etc

Like all "sales", its a matter of tactics.

                Sen

Genius! Or better yet, take a leaf out of SteveHs book and secretly plot to murder your existing machine: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1240378380

Re: Best excuses to buy a coffee machine?

Gday Caffeinated Squirrel and good luck with the impending delivery (with any luck, both of them  ;D).

I am very lucky that my lovely wife has been/is very supportive of my coffee habit, and has never questioned why I needed to upgrade my coffee gear. Her line is, "Oh well, it could be worse, you could spend all your money on beer."

As a new dad, I can offer you this advice. Dont give your wife a couple of coffees in a row if shes breastfeeding. You wont hear the end of it for about a week.
Caffed up mum + caffed up bub = bad ju-ju :-[

Pity you cant do what I do with fishing gear. Buy it and leave it in the shed for a couple of months then bring it out. when asked I can honestly say, "Ive had it for a long time, it isnt new at all" [smiley=evil.gif]

Yikes! Sounds like it should be cappuccino for daddy and babyccino for mummy and the little one!

Re: Best excuses to buy a coffee machine?

Yeah good one stan, my wife is a mad wax head, she was wearing a new wetsuit for ages before I noticed, by that time she could say she had it all summer.

I can never decide what to get, I want a new mazzer mini, but theres an extemly sexy fishing rod and real for the same price I want. I dont know which way to go.

Back to the topic, before my first came along 5 years ago I brought heaps of stuff saying "we wont be able to afford it when the baby comes" it worked a treat for some really nice fishing gear that still takes pride of place. Had the second 3 weeks ago, now all I do is hand money to chemists for the next concoction to keep the baby happy. BTW you can still afford stuff after the baby comes, but dont tell your wife.

Theres your answer C-squirrel: CS Wow Decaf.

Just tell Mrs Squirrel that it requires a good machine to get a good coffee out of it (fingers crossed)

What worked for me last upgrade was telling Mrs. Flynn that the prices are likely to increase (truth - I saved at least $200  :-*).

It almost worked for the second intended upgrade. SWMBOs response: Sure, as long as I fund it.

I suppose I could argue that the $2K or so I spend will come out of my half   - but she isnt silly.

Stans idea sounds good for stuff that normally gets stored in a shed but could you consign a brand new machine to the shed for a couple of months and then try the "What? This old thing?" line when it suddenly turns up in the kitchen???

Whats a bit of pain between you and access to great coffee on demand... :P

Go for it mate, the pain will subside and then you can both enjoy wonderful brews, hot chocs or what ever you like 8-)

                              Mal.
