You dont need an excuse, just do it and put your foot down.
(when your allowed back in the front door ;D)
Seriously, just do it, its an investment as a quality unit in some situations will outlast the other half.

Tell her that it will be a free of cost machine as it will be paid for by the baby bonus

I was allowed to upgrade Silvia to a HX with our first bub (15 weeks Monday) on the premise of all oodles of extra sterilising steam for bottles, teats (not my wifes) and pacifiers (cool before using). Just relocate the noisy grinder for those baby/mummy napping caffeine injections! Good luck!!

As a new dad, I can offer you this advice. Dont give your wife a couple of coffees in a row if shes breastfeeding. You wont hear the end of it for about a week.
Caffed up mum + caffed up bub = bad ju-ju :-[
LOL - Im in the same boat.   The wife had a coffee from the Silvia and then breastfed...baby no sleep - family no sleep.

...better yet, take a leaf out of SteveHs book and secretly plot to murder your existing machine...
In my sleep befuddled state this morning, I ground my coffee, loaded my moka pot, and put it on the stove...

...10 minutes later, still no coffee, but there was an unholy smell coming from the kitchen.  Then I realised I forgot to put water in the bottom of the moka pot.

For the faint-hearted - be warned that the following paragraphs may contain representations of violence towards coffee machines.  And for the impressionable/adventurous - dont try this at home!

Not only did I burn the coffee to cinders, I also melted the rubber seals and basically fused the two parts of the moka pot together.  When I finally got them apart, it was not pretty; melted rubber/burned coffee/toxic fumes etc...

              Oops.

I threatened to do this in jest and then I actually ended up doing it by stupidity! And Im now reduced to plunger coffee - noooooo!

R.I.P. Moka Pot - I promise you my little aluminium (ex-)friend that there will be a suitable period of mourning before I start see other coffee machines.

Plunger coffe can be very nice, you just need to have your coffee roasted and ground to match your brewing method.

Over the years i have had sopme very nice plunger coffee.

                          Not 100% sure yet.
                          Probably the KN-8828B.
Have only just done our tax, but when the money comes through........
Anne Cooper has been showing me this model and she is happy with it.

Im sure youll be hearing from me soon Greg

A caffeinated dad is one who walks the floor rocking the baby to sleep when she is trying to sleep in the very small hours of the morning ! Be sure to point that out to her, when going to see Miss Silvia 8-)

Mission complete! Picked up Miss Silvia this evening and have been playing with her all night (thank you Mrs. Squirrel!).

The damage was $720 for a 2008 Miss Silvia, with 1kg beans, s/steel tamp and milk jug, and 7g/8g/14g/16g filter baskets thrown in. If this isnt a good deal I dont want to know...

I suppose now I had better get good at this coffee making stuff. So far the results have been wildly variable to say the least!
