I have owned a cafe for 3 years and I have a dream to be able to roast my own blends instead of relying on a coffee supplier. Who are the best people to teach me this and is it financialy viable to do this?

Welcome to CS gruzza! Depending on where youre located I may be able to provide you with some other leads. As for being financially viable, I guess it depends on your perspectives, ie. what you want to achieve and your objectives. For example, theres an organisation based in Sydney that charge around $5k for a five day course. Havent done this myself but know my expectations would be pretty high if I were to enrol!
Cheers!

I Reckon Mario ( Super ) would be better. I think you really need to look at pedigree and industry standards. Perhaps lose the lab coat ads and maybe start with home roasting, CS will point you I believe. The main thing is to enjoy yourself and explore. I may sound a little flippant but Im not.

Re: Where can you learn professional roasting
Thanks to those who have taken time to reply my post. Im based on Gold Coast and currenty turnover around 30kg a week which is small but considering the location Im in its not too bad. Id be looking for a different site to pursue this venture. Looking to do around 50kg a week.

Re: Where can you learn professional roasting
Willem Boot, or Mane Alves are both quite informative. I dont know about the old school comment but some more recent roaster arrivals both in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth have done both courses. I think its going to be what you put in. No one is going to tell you how to roast on your roaster in your location, they will give you ideas and leads and teach you to cup, which is the key to roasting. You need to want to roast for the passion and perhaps not for the dollars, as it is a journey that requires attention and dedication. Also look at the SCAA as well as overseas journals and manufacturers. Ambex, Diedrich and Probat do courses as well.

Unless, of course, you are independently wealthy.

Re: Where can you learn professional roasting
If you concentrate on the quality and are passionate enough to challenge yourself, the dollars will follow. Working out how much you can save roasting is not the answer. Not to dismiss the monetary factor but it does tend to be alot of peoples motivation.
