    Re: Communication Breakdown...

So...you are the guys who go into the resturant then, read the menu and try to order something thats not on it??

Really, if you want to see how the other half do actually live, come and stand behind a coffee machine for a day and just see what we do put up with...

    Or...

Just go and read the barista venting thread...

Honestly, you guys might be ONE person in the day that orders different...but that day has probably had any where up to 1000 drinks...and Im thinking of those places I know are doing 10 kg per day...

I will try and fulfil most peoples different requests. I could rattle off a hundred different drinks I do for people that all want it done really hot, quarter strength, very weak, with soy, half water/half milk, the list goes on...I know them all because theyre coming back again and again and I know them all by name...yes..thats because Im a barista, its my job. But sometimes, there is the straw that breaks the camels back I can tell you! (though I always try to oblige...really.)

The places that Rocky described are places that have people who make coffee, not baristas...and hes been to them once. Hence why he got the response he got...

      I hear you scoots...

Probably one for the venting thread but I had one who wanted 1/2 full cream, 1/2 skim textured in 2 separate jugs please... : Some people are just out to make your day difficult. Perhaps its some sorta power thing to be "different"...

Its not difficult to identify places where the brew is made out of passion. Theyre almost always waaaaay different to places where coffee is made for the dollar. I guess if you choose the latter- and  what more could you reasonably expect at an airport- you will most likely receive what youd expect/deserve... :-?

Unfortunately at an airport you dont have a choice.

We were coming home from Brisbane yesterday morning and hadnt had a morning cuppa, so we summoned up the courage, picked a cafe outlet on the first floor (eeney meeney miney mo) and ordered two small flat whites with an extra shot. Well, we got exactly what we expected (but not what we deserved!). Horrible beyond belief.  :P

We got to Sydney, got the car and decided to take a detour home (after stopping on the way to take care of some business - a costly mistake) via Denniss at Sylvania. We couldnt wait to get a nice cuppa, as well as say gday to Dennis. As we got there, waiting to turn right into the side street just past the shop, Julie looks over and says "Theres a CLOSED sign on Denniss door." OH NO!!! Yep, forgot about the Monday 11.00 close. Missed him by a half hour. Bugger!!

So we decided to take another detour to Cronulla, found Grind Espresso - ahhh! Beautiful! Finally got the horrible taste of Brisbane Airport muck out of our mouths. Gave Buzz Bar a lash too, a bit less beautiful but OK.

So next time were catching an early flight and are tempted to try airport coffee again, well fight the caffeine craving a bit harder (a LOT harder).

            Sorry I agree with Greg...

I have to do a 6.05 flight from Brisy to Townsvile next week... I will do my best to have a coffee here at home...

But may not get a chance... I will not have one on teh plane... And have a Taxi booked to get me ASAP to the Tvl Hospital on arrival..

So which is worse... Airport of Hospital ??

At some stage I will need and want a coffee, I should not be discriminated agents, just because most franchises / cafés do not understand.. It is not the workers, they have been told / instructed... For some, when you tell them their eyes light up... Others have said, Thanks for the info; always knew I did not like teh coffee here for a reason..

I will end up with a Dare or other pre packaged iced coffee as a get me by. BUGGER.. I hate being disadvantaged due to my tastes... but it is more frustrating as there are plenty of shops... But they serve CRAP..

Yeah, best option, Chris.  :-/ Unfortunately our morning habits have accustomed us to 2-3 beautiful coffees every morning, so that if were missing out, we sometimes (mistakenly) try to make do with inferior product. We wont succumb to that trap again any time soon. Internation@l Ro@st with scalded milk? No thanks!

              I hate airports.

In my experience hospital is worse, had the worst coffee ever when my wife was in hospital. It was so bad I went and had an instant to get the flavour out of my mouth!!!!

                  Re: Communication Breakdown...

have you thought about asking for a piccolo long black or a piccolo latte?

generally speaking, coffee shops dont keep a milk of the day to top up the pitcher with.

& if you read your long black order - you specified that it was the single shot that was to have less than the usual amount (25-30ml) of water, making it a long black on a ristretto base.

                  mais non?

                    Re: Communication Breakdown...

frankly, regardless of any real or imagined communication breakdown im still a little amazed that anyone would bother to order coffee in a hotel bistro or an airport and expect anything that approaches a drinkable beverage.

Speaking strictly for myself, these are 2 places I would never bother ordering coffee in.

I have always found the most amazingly ironic thing about this whole "impossible search for quality coffee in cafes" is that you so often see a machine costing several thousand dollars being totally wasted by a completely untrained salesperson.

I guess Im an optomist by nature. I approach situations with a positive manner & outlook and tend to expect a positive result. Sometimes it happens - sometimes not.
I would not have thought it was too much to expect a really good coffee in a top Hotel but I think the learning is that the setting is irrelevant - its the barista who counts. (this is why I still occasionally take a punt in an airport).
Im not likely to slash my wrists over it all....

                          Re: Communication Breakdown...

I visited my regular cafe this morning and asked for a Doppio....the serving girl (not the Barrista) had never heard of it and remarked that it was the first time anyone had ever ordered it that way. She just knew it is a double shot of espresso. Its a good cafe, with a very healthy turn over...but goes to show that not everyone knows the authentic coffee names.

... or goes to show too many people use milk!

                                Re: Communication Breakdown...

im no expert but i find it easier to work your way up to the drink you want rather than subtract things to make the drink you want.

i.e. ill have a short black with 30mls of hot water or
a short black pour onto 30mls of hot water.
rather than a long black with not as much water and only a single shot.

                                dont know if this helps.
i totally understand about the pouring out of half the latte. but it was an airport.
im not sure how i would order that one but with the long black i would start from a short black and work up rather than backwards.
                                hope this helps.
