Re: Communication Breakdown...
Usually i take the order and write it down in MY language..
Your coffee would have read either a 3/4 long black or a 3/4 latte
thats for 6 ounce cups anyway.
And your right with the whole young barista thing...
I had a coffee at the Jamaica Bler in the Sydney airport terminal...$4.80 for a 12ounce(medium) with a single shot(ordered a double) and burnt as hell despite the fact she was using a thermometer !!!
If she had of spoken English i would have told her how crap she was!
Having said all that...a coffee experience is not all about the coffee though it the most important factor.

Re: Communication Breakdown...
Whats chance does the average barista have when snobs cant decide on definitions. This whole thread kind of proves a point, as does the communication breakdown thread.
We cant even find consensus on a flat white in that thread.
edit, oh this is the communication thread. :-?
I mean the latte not on the menue thread.

Doppio Machiato, Doppio Latte....never heard of these. Wouldnt they be a Long Mac and a Large Latte? I wouldnt have thought you could fit 2 regular lattes in a glass...apart from that picture of one posted in a different thread.
But I agree with you Muppet man...no matter what the coffees are officially called, its what theyre commonly called that really matters.
Thats why I agree with the OP, if hed asked for something like a piccolo latte, I bet someone elses left nut that the person taking his order wouldnt have had a clue what he was asking for.
Im now going back to ordering how I would normally order....double shot please.

By that logic, if Id have asked for a machiato, Id have been given a stain, or a glass of milk if Id asked for a latte (I know, I know). I wasnt asked "a double what?" , I was asked as if doppio was something/a term that the guy had never heard before.Originally posted by 5D554D475A3E0 link=1249648323/36#36 date=1251092361Fair enough, you just asked for a double.....Originally posted by 246360232838500 link=1249648323/35#35 date=1251091909Mmmmm just back from BBB...I asked for a Doppio and was answered with "whats that?". Its a conspiracy.....
Double what?
I think Andy was on the money...too many milk drinks.
With all respect doppio is not a term often used by cutomers, most would ask for a double. In training it might be reffered too but use of the term double is far more common. I guess the advantage to calling it doppio is people will know you mean double shot rather then double size. Also it can be dangerous to assume what customers mean when they use language like this. Sometimes they are trying to sound clever without really knowing what they are ordering.
I agree doppio just means double. You could have meant a doppio machiato or doppio latte or anything. If someone ordered that off me I would definatly clarify that they want double espresso. If they are a return customer it wouldnt be nessasary.
(wise old man voice) Knowing the meaning of the word doppio does not a good barista make.

Agree absolutely Steve. Such a majority of milk drinks that a doppio ristretto or doppio espresso probably doesnt jump into their heads I reckon without the extra explanation.

Re: Communication Breakdown...
If you walked into my store youd be charged for a small with an extra shot instead of a regular with half the milk.Originally posted by 1C212D25374E0 link=1249648323/0#0 date=1249648323I ordered a latte but with only half the usual milk.
Again, charged for a small, but easily put into a regular cup half filled if thats what you wanted.Originally posted by 1C212D25374E0 link=1249648323/0#0 date=1249648323"long black with only half the usual amount of water - thats a single shot with less water"
The girls I worked with have been taught that if theyre unsure of the order to direct it to me or another Barista who will generally sort it out, Im unaware of anyone weve been unable to accommodate...then again, I work at a Gloria Jeans, so no doubt theres some here that instantaly discount my opinion because Im not a "Barista".
