  • It Tastes good.

Hi, im new here i just recently bought a rancillio silva and rocky grinder. My question is we mainly have capps and they are tasting pretty good , different every time , but good. My misses says there as good as some cafes out there. but when i pull the shot it does not take anywhere near 30 seconds i would say between 10 to 15sec, i have tried finer grinds and tampering more into the basket but then it takes 10 to 15 seconds to even get coffee coming out of the head and then it is droping out not flowin , What am i doing wrong am i missing something.

    thanks

    Welcome tallman,

Sounds like all you need are:[*]larger baskets[*]fresh beans[*]correct dose and tamp[*]perhaps a little training  :-?

If youre using the standard baskets, ditch them. Theyre too small.

If your beans come from pretty much anywhere other than a roaster who has the cohunas to put roast date on them and theyre more than 3 weeks old, theyre stale..

You should feel a little resistance as you load your group handle and then do the same thing each time...Look or roughly 25-30 ml in 25 sec from when you see the first drop...

    Hope that helps

In addition, where did you purchase from ?

Freshly roasted is not always what it implies and some of the franchises also promote their beans and they can be also suspect at times..

havent been there myself, but heard they are OK as far as beans go. Im a coffee barun fan myself, but they may be a bit far for you to go. There are tons of variables that may be causing your issues, so maybe try a few different things. Id suggest going a bit coarser and tamping a bit harder with more coffee in the basket (the double one is OK, but nowhere near as good as the synesso baskets). If that doesnt work, try going a bit finer on the grind and tamp a bit lighter. Anyway, the 30 second rule is more of a guide than anything. My shots tend to go a bit longer if anything, and it drips rather than flows at the start but soon moves into the honey-like consistency. Naked portafilter has helped me also, so might be worth a look at one of these. Youve got urself a pretty decent setup there, but the Silvia takes a bit of work to get the results you want. Keep at it and youll be fine. in the meantime, if the coffee tastes good anyway, its only going to get better from here on in ;D

                Re: It Tastes good.

                Hi tallman,

If one click of your Rocky sends the shot from drips to gushers, then that is a bit unusual, given that I have no issues with CoffeeCraft beans.

What you want is somewhere in between, and the small steps in Rocky are usually not that far apart. If you get a bolt dent in the puck without running the water (load, lock, and then unload and look) then over-dosing is a possibility. Another possibility is that the stability of Rockys grind can be less than ideal without the teflon tape mod.

Im in Bellevue Heights, and if thats close enough to come for a hands- on here send me a PM and well try and arrange a time.

                  Hi Tallman

I too have recently purchased the same setup and are having the same challenges that you describe. I have played and played with tamp and grinds, different beans, freshly roasted beans. The coffee is drinkable but still far cry from the good coffee that I know the machine can pull-off. Let us know if you come up with the winning solution or hints.

                    Re: It Tastes good.

Yesterday i used over 500 grams of beans just pulling shots and had it down pretty much , now today ive pulled about 4 shots all have smelt bitter and have tasted bitter yet im doing it the same way , i dunno this is annoying to say the least , also a bean must have got stuck in the grinder and it wouldnt grind i had to empty it before it came good again is that a normal thing that happens?

                      Re: It Tastes good.

It takes a while to get settled into a routine on Silvia, persevere and the rewards will come, do the teflon mod to Rocky and the stepless mod to give you fine adjustment, its simple to do and costs next to nothing. Synesso ridgeless double baskets are the way to go. I have to adjust my grinder each day as a roast gets older.
                      Good luck
