  • Depressing state of affairs for coffee in Paris

    Bonjour,

Having just returned from a stay in France, we were somewhat saddened to see the image below whilst walking along the Champs Élysées.

Thousands of the suckers and heaps of people in the store buying them.
All of this in some of the most prime real estate you could ever get.

    It bothers me.

Yeah, you definitely dont go to France for the coffee.

Beautiful place, love Paris, but their coffee...  :P  (The photo probably says a fair bit about Nestles global expansion. Like McDs and Choka Cola, theyre everywhere.)

Interesting business model they are running - they have beautiful looking stores in the top European cities in the most up market streets. Its a bit like Lexus vs toyota. Unfortunately the coffe flavour experience is poor.

I agree, Paris is not the place to go for good coffee. Switzerland is worse. Recently we were in Switzerland and the apartment we had came with a Nespresso m/c. The local cafe product was so ordinary we purchased some capsules and used the m/c. Interestingly, each pod is only 5gms - no wonder it tastes weak. i had a few left over and brought them home. It took 3 of them to fill my LM single shot basket!! And when I tried it in my Silvia, it was obviously a very coarse grind

But the shops and their sales people are beautiful

In many places in Paris you pay to be seen in the cafes etc. To sit down and have a coffee costs a lot more than a takeaway. Quality leaves much to be desired either way. Given the enormous rents in the above-mentioned locality, you can begin to understand why companies with deep pockets can afford to be there.
Unfortunately the product has enormous appeal with people for its ease of use. A few family members have bought it for this reason.
They still prefer my cooffee though!

I think these machines are "Lifestyle" coffee makers. Like people buy Bose and think they are getting real Hifi
Shows how good marketing can overcome a rather ordinary end product.

BTW Sydney has a similar store on King St not far from LV, TAG etc

The pineapple industry was started by an entrepreneur who was looking for a new product he could market.

Up until then there was no industry.

It was all created by marketing.

The first failed attempt was to try and market the pineapple as a sex toy.
