Re: Skybury Coffee Australia
My experience with Skybury dates back two years when we first visited Mareeba. We thoroughly enjoyed their tour of the plantation and the coffee purchased had a well rounded flavour and no sign of bitterness linked to over extraction. We have since orded roasted beans but I was not able to replicate the flavour on my basic Sunbeam. Having recently purchased a Rancilio Sylvia and Rocky I am tempted to try again.
Last year we visited the Coffee Company and were bitterly disappointed with coffee for tasting brewed and left in vacuum flasks for two hours. I agree that the museum was well worth the visit.

Re: Skybury Coffee Australia
Interesting....I was last up that way a couple of years ago. Skybury was as described. The coffee at Coffeeworks was even worse- more like 2/10 :Originally posted by 2728223423273524460 link=1258062243/10#10 date=1258944931Coffee Works was highly recommended though.

Re: Skybury Coffee Australia
I was actually in Mareeba for work last week and seeing just the head of this thread and then the signs while driving I thought I would give it a go.
Not impressed coffee was nuclear hot and the roasted beans they had on display looked to be several months old.
I asked some of the farmers I work with about the place and it wasnt one of the most liked, apparently the business was started out with a government grant and after initial good business has gone downhill dramatically.
Having said that there are alot of places growing coffee up there, but due to time constraints did not get a chance to try any others.
Coffee Works was highly recommended though.

Re: Skybury Coffee Australia
I have enjoyed most of the Mountain Top beans that I have purchased through Bean Bay, even though they have been some of the more expensive greens. They have a range of greens all aimed more at the specialty market and been popular too as far as I recall.

Re: Skybury Coffee Australia
I have recently had a holiday up in Kuranda and we did a tour of the coffee places up in Mareeba. We found the on site served brew from the "Coffee Works" cafe to be the one we enjoyed the most, it was their "black mountain" roast. Followed by "Jaques" Espresso blend. Skybury was disappointing, but it was a very hot brew, perhaps the staff would be the biggest problem on the day. We have had "Tichum creek" coffee before but Coffee Works once again won over them, the owner however is worth a chat. I would class us as amateur , but I enjoy a nice coffee, regularly!

Re: Skybury Coffee Australia
To be honest i think the beans from Wombah coffee plantation near Iluka has a better product and there price is of Beanbay standards.
But for the most part, Australian coffee is dear due to harvesting prices and the lack of third world slave wages.

Re: Skybury Coffee Australia
There are better Australian Grown than Skybury. I live near to them and have not enjoyed their coffee at all. There are several others in the same area that do a better coffee. However all are more expensive that I like so I roast my own most of the time. I have been able to buy green beans but even those they charge more than Beanbay. >

Re: Skybury Coffee Australia
I like Australian grown coffee!
99% of it is machine harvested and the overly green cherries get graded and sized out later in the processing stages.
As for which coffee to buy? I would look for the northern NSW grown types. Im led to believe that our altitude is higher and soil is a little bit better(rich & volcanic).
Look for places around the Nimbin, Bangalow, Byron bay areas. I have recently sampled some Winchester Park greens and was impressed
Dont be surprised if you cant get a hold of any at the moment though as we had some very violent weather last year which led to low harvests this year
Good luck!

Skybury Coffee Australia
Hi learnt about this place last night. Has anyone tried this Australian grown coffee. Im interested if anyone has experienced it. Certainly more expensive than Andys Greenbay products but I would like to try it for the experience of it. Maybe Andy could source some for GB.
