    Re: Mobile Coffee Cart

Sounds like you are pretty early in your planning, each area has its own unique interpretation of "the rules" so you need to go and talk to your local council. They will put a lot of obstacles in your way so you need to be persistent, go and talk to them early in your planning so you know if it is a waste of time or a possibility. Also running a cart will be hard work and you have to realise that there is a lot more than just making coffee. You will be a running a small business so you have to handle staff, stock control, and a million other things so just loving coffee wont be enough. I hope it works out for you but make sure you go in with your eyes wide open.

    Coffee Cart Business in NSW

    Hey folks,

Trust everyone is having a nice start to the week.

Ive been a home barista (roasting is up next in my list) for the past 4 years now and have been keeping myself up to date with industry news through magazine subscriptions (i.e. BeanScene and Cafe Culture). I still re-read old articles over and over again, each time with a higher sense of motivation and inspiration to introduce a concept into cafe industry. The market is saturated with mediocre coffee, and I think there is opportunity there.

I am thinking of starting a little cafe; but thought it would be wiser to start small by doing a coffee cart business first. Perhaps just try getting my concepts out there (e.g. choice of food) while keeping in line with the likes of espresso standards served in Campos Newtown (NSW), Di Bella (QLD) or Tobys Estate (NSW).

While I was just walking around the city, I noticed a few coffee carts around the streets of Sydney. Perhaps I have not Googled hard enough, but is there a NSW government site that details the area coffee carts are allowed to trade? Food Authority NSW and CityOfSydney provide details of health requirements and permits, but nothing much on the location where small business owners can set up their stalls.

Is there anyone out there who knows of this information? Im interested in bringing coffee to the public on a daily basis, not just in markets/exhibitions.

If you have any experience in this field, I am more than interested to hear your thoughts or challenges faced too (via PM), and what kept you going in this competitive industry?

Looking forward to hear from you.

    Thanks,
    Darryl.

f you do a search with google I think the Sydney City regs are there in a PDF somewhere, they seem to be the defacto standard used by a lot of councils. Basically 2 sinks one for hands one for wash up. Easy clean surfaces (read metal) refrigeration and know how to handle food without killing anyone Wink

    Thank you Will do

    Friendly and personalised customer service
    Fast service and turnaround times
    Amazing espresso and milk drinks
    Foot traffic

I think if you can tick the above four criteria you have a recipe for success anywhere in Australia no matter how strong the competition is.

Dont know about Brisbane, however while in Adelaide last Friday I commented to my better half that I would hate to be trying to make a living out of coffee, there seems to be a roaster/espresso bar on every corner.

In my opinion the answer is yes to both.

Yes its saturated (with mediocre and bad coffee).
Yes its viable if you are going to make GOOD coffee and can get your reputation out there.

*snap Chris (I should have refreshed my screen).

    P.S. Welcome to CS Nancy.

I reckon that the Australian market is pretty much saturated with bad coffee, especially in the CBD of most big cities. If on the other hand, you want to invest in great coffee, staff and equipment and produce coffee to the best possible standard, you will offer something special and like the great places, also be successful. This requires commitment to the bean and the process, not the dollar.
