Re: Coffee lovers forking out $12 a cup for trendy brews

Hey Jon W, the Unico pulls a fabulous espresso, has the smaller boiler (wife rarely drinks coffee) but can easily cope with coffee for 8 if need be. I really bought it for that retro look and thoe side panels go beautifrlly on our Tassie Oak bench. I have always been in love with the Faema e61 from a practical and aesthetic point of view and this machine sort of realized my dream of retro+faema e61+ modern reliability/domestic practicality. It is a dream fit and savesme having to spend my life running out to buy those pesky $12 coffees!

Sure, MAYBE you might not learn anything new, but what if, just what if, at the very LEAST, its oh, I dont know, fun? Or are you too old and curmudgeonly for that too? Having seen it all before perhaps youve had all the fun youre going to have?
      You could well be right.
      wow, thats just sad.

if that $12 means spending 10min with Toshi then its money well spent - the guy is a flippin phenomenon with a palate that is out of this world and a memory for coffee profiles like a good sommelier should have for wine

Id pay $12 to pick Toshis brain on cofee and would consider getting a chance to taste the stuff an added bonus!

In your eyes it may well be, but as Edith Piaf said (No Regrets) its been one hell of a ride, and guess what? the curtain hasnt come down yet
Fun! a juvenile term, you reach a stage in life where enjoyment and quality take over from fun, and Im enjoying a new grand child, family, going overseas each year for the past 5 (off to the US again in 2010) my new Bezzera GD, photography, and learning how to roast coffee.
Yep the fun is over, and Im enjoying life like never before.
But I still aint gonna pay 12 stinkin bucks to watch some clown in a funny cap make (some serious gourmet sh!t!) in a vac pot, even if I do get to consume the fruits of his labour. ;D

Ahhh, love, aint it a wonderful thing? I can understand why your enamoured with the US.
Pesky $12 cups! for $12 I can buy another kilo of green beans that will give me around 50 espressos, works out to about 20 cents a cup, and I can share these 50 cups with friends and family, now thats value for money.

and here we are again - bandying around terms like juvenile. Why does being old make you so freakin superior?

Why is fun "juvenlie"? Sounds to me like youre having a lot of "fun" in the current phase of your life, but are perhaps a little too old, curmudgeonly, and dare i say narrow minded to admit it.

Id be happy to pay the asking price to get to sample some different brews, take in the theatre of the process, and have a chat to someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about what they are serving.  Might not do it every day, but once in a while, $12 for this is really a bargain.
Couldnt agree more.  On the proviso that the staff member truly was knowledgeable and not an apathetic member of the McDonalds generation. If Salvatores crew are manning the bar, that shouldnt be the case!

Mind you during my 35 years in business imparting knowledge and providing information was called customer service and was provided free of charge
Then you would know that although not always discretely charged for, it always has a cost. Costs that arent recovered through direct charging are recovered by higher goods/services prices.

Almost Epic, the title of the song was (Non je ne regrette rien) loose translation (No regrets) Ha,  ;D just clicked on the link, now I know what you were on about, had not seen that ad before, great stuff, shame its for Nescafe.

Nope, I think Epics rendition is how I hear it. A classic mondegreen!

Youre being a bit too literal for a Friday afternoon Jon

I went there today and they were busy as all hell so the publicity didnt hurt.

They were a bit overwhelmed though, I had my coffee at the register and waited 5mins to pay as the Barista didnt know how to use the
                                reigster.

Lots of people were lining up to try the syphon experience.

I hope it goes well, and the more people who learn about what goes into making a GREAT coffee the better. A more discerning general public is good for the industry as a whole.

Anyway, I had a very nice double ristretto kenyan + el salvador blend made on the Slayer. $3
