    Re: BONSOY RECALL !

Might be just me and my positive thinking, but I kind of feel that if any soy milk company could come back from a recall, it would be the bonsoy people - there are so many people who prefer it over other brands. Hopefully this translates into support once they are back in sale again.

What a lousy Christmas present for Spiral Foods
I did ponder if the release of the "voluntary recall" was intentionally held back to Christmas eve, surely the best day of the year to make as small amount of press impact as possible. I certainly hope that wasnt the case!

I hope they do make a comeback,
      As do I.
It has certainly been the highest rated soy product on CS for a long time with the only real negatives (till now) being the price... but even then concensus seemed to be that the higher price was well worth it.

Which makes me wonder just how much difference (if any) removing the Kombu seaweed will make to taste/performance.

In the meantime I, as do others, will have to find an alternative
Good timing for National Foods who are pushing their Makin Milk
"Vitasoy Cafe" pretty hard at the moment.

      Industrial espionage conspiracy theory anyone?

This will explain why everyone seems to prefer it.  Kombu, a seaweed, was first used in Japan as a flavor enhancer.  In 1908 Kikunae Ikeda, a chemistry professor at Imperial University of Tokyo isolated the main ingredient -- MSG, or monosodium glutamate -- and started what has become a million-dollar industry.

MSG is now the most widely used flavor enhancer in the world.

Did you not question them on that?

                Ring Food Standards 1300 303 794
or Spiral Foods (see the Media Contact number above).

                  Re: BONSOY RECALL !

I would assume its only illegal if they knew about the recall... good luck proving that.

It would be far better to educate than to "smack em"...
Maybe printout a few copies of the Spiral Foods letter above and leave it with any cafe you see using it.

                    Good point Andy...

I hope they are back up and running soon though as for mine, nothing comes close...

Can anyone clarify if it is actually illegal to sell a product subject to voluntary recall?

                          Re: BONSOY RECALL !

                          http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/_srcfiles/Food%20Recall_WEB.pdf

The use of the word ‘voluntary’ does not correspond to whether or not the distribution network/chains can choose to remove the product from sale. When a recall occurs, all of the particular food product subject to the recall must be removed from the market place.

While food retail businesses would not normally need a recall plan, they may be part of another business’ recall. For example, they may need to remove recalled stock from shelves and return it to the manufacturer, importer or wholesaler. If a business is required to remove recalled stock from sale, the business must comply with the food disposal requirements of the Code.

Clause 11 of Standard 3.2.2 (Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code) requires a food business to ensure food that is recalled is held, separated and identified from other food until it is:
                          • destroyed
                          • used for purposes other than human consumption
                          • returned to its supplier
                          • further processed in a way that ensures its safety and suitability
                          • ascertained to be safe and suitable

It means that the authorities have not issued a recall notice; it always looks better for the manufacturer.
