    Re: BONSOY RECALL !

OK... I just got off the phone to Food Standards.

The spokesperson agreed with me that the word "voluntary" can confuse some people.

The media notice above clearly says that consumers should not use the product.

But if the customers in the cafe in question were told "by the way theres been a "voluntary" recall", and dont read the notice, they may not realise the severity of the situation.

Ive suggested to Food Standards and Spiral Foods that the notices probably need a clear warning to the retailers as well.

Jason would you mind whispering in their ear and ask them to stop selling it?
If they keep selling it they will have to be reported for the safety of the public.

        Thyroid. 2001 May;11(5):493-500.
        Iodine excess and hyperthyroidism.

        Roti E, Uberti ED.

Università di Parma, Cattedra di Endocrinologia, Italy.

150 microg iodine are daily required for thyroid hormone synthesis. The thyroid gland has intrinsic mechanisms that maintain normal thyroid function even in the presence of iodine excess. Large quantities of iodide are present in drugs, antiseptics, contrast media and food preservatives. Iodine induced hyperthyroidism is frequently observed in patients affected by euthyroid iodine deficient goiter when suddenly exposed to excess iodine. Possibly the presence of autonomous thyroid function permits the synthesis and release of excess quantities of thyroid hormones. The presence of thyroid autoimmunity in patients residing in iodine-insufficient areas who develop iodine-induced hyperthyroidism has not been unanimously observed. In iodine-sufficient areas, iodine-induced hyperthyroidism has been reported in euthyroid patients with previous thyroid diseases. Euthyroid patients previously treated with antithyroid drugs for Graves disease are prone to develop iodine-induced hyperthyroidism. As well, excess iodine in hyperthyroid Graves disease patients may reduce the effectiveness of the antithyroid drugs. Occasionally iodine-induced hyperthyroidism has been observed in euthyroid patients with a previous episode of post-partum thyroiditis, amiodarone destructive or type II thyrotoxicosis and recombinant interferon-alpha induced destructive thyrotoxicosis. Amiodarone administration may induce thyrotoxicosis. Two mechanisms are responsible for this condition. One is related to excess iodine released from the drug, approximately 9 mg of iodine following a daily dose of 300 mg amiodarone. This condition is an iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis or type I amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis. The other mechanism is due to the amiodarone molecule that induces a destruction of the thyroid follicles with a release of preformed hormones. This condition is called amiodarone-induced destructive thyrotoxicosis or type II thyrotoxicosis. Patients developing type I thyrotoxicosis in general have preexisting nodular goiter whereas those developing type II thyrotoxicosis have a normal thyroid gland. The latter group of patients, after recovering from the destructive process, may develop permanent hypothyroidism as the consequence of fibrosis of the gland.

The original 24th Jan recall was for "all dates up to 03/11/11" which I assume was their last batch anyway so this isnt really a new report.

True, probably not new news, heard via health department and as youve already mentioned Thundergod the term voluntary can confuse.
Means the distirbutor in this case Spiral, can advertise the recall themselves and make it look better for them, otherwise they get sent a bill for the print ads.

Tell them its illegal to sell it.
If the Health Department finds out theyll be in deep sh!t.
Print out a copy of the recall notice and show them the dates.
They are playing with peoples health; if they wont listen, report them.

If you wont, PM the name of the cafe to me and Ill report them.

                    Might be a post-recall batch?

For now, I guess they just have to repackage the recalled stuff and sell it as MalSoy?

                      Re: BONSOY RECALL !

Interesting that Spiral foods have published the following:

To try and add some clarity to this difficult situation, some facts:

The company voluntarily initiated this recall after having been told by the health authorities that 7 or 8 people were “diagnosed with thyroid conditions”, plus one newborn with hypothyroidism. (FSANZ website). We do not know the nature or severity of ill health of the 7/8 adults, or whether they are suffering from hyperthyroidism (too much iodine) or hypothyroidism (a deficiency of iodine). This has also not been explained to the public by the health authorities.

What has not been reported in the media is that the adults all came from the ONE medical practice in NSW? (FSANZ website). Also, we have yet to be provided with hard evidence showing that this entire group did in fact consume Bonsoy, that the evidence of Bonsoy consumption is not just anecdotal and that the consumption caused their “condition”.

Voluntary Recall notices were published in major newspapers nationally last week, as this was the first practical occasion to do so after having gathered all the information we could. There was some initial doubt, as to which batches might be involved, and it took some time to clarify this, so as a precaution, we decided to include all dates to lessen confusion. Major distributors were notified just prior to Christmas, which is when we found out there was a problem. It was just physically impossible to notify every coffee shop that might use Bonsoy, as they mostly buy from other retailers and we simply don’t know who they are. We acted as quickly as we could, but wanted to have as much correct information as possible before we did so.

Spiral Foods is committed to providing healthy and safe food; if you think about it, it is in our interests to do so.

There are no regulations or standards in Australia regulating the amount of iodine in food. This explains why there is no pre-testing of food for iodine, the standards that exist relate to consumption only.

Please bear with us as we investigate and get to the bottom of this issue and establish all the facts, not just the allegations.

I guess theres never just one side to any story....

Id be looking hard at this bit.

The NSW Food Authority at this stage is playing safe and treating it very seriously. i.e. Not taking any chances.

Maybe Im (still) a little cynical but it still sounds like justification for releasing the notice on Christmas eve.

So... it doesnt matter how much iodine is in a product if its not consumed?

This planet just gets whackier every day.

I bought a packet of dried fruit and nuts a while ago that carried a warning "may contain traces of nuts".... I thought to myself... "it bloody better have more than traces".

Bonsoy shouldve had - "may contain traces of iodine..". 7,500 traces per cup!!!

My wife is seriously missing her Bonsoy. I hope they sort it out as theres nothing else that comes close for her. (And thanks to our local Coles who refunded our stash of Bonsoy without receipts.)

Hello all, let me just start by saying that I loooooove Bonsoy milk, have been using it at work and drinking it daily over the past 21/2 years. Im so dissapointed by what is currently happening and miss my cuppa dearly!!! Saying that, I have been extremely sick and even after release from hospital Id drink a cup of bonsoy to line up my stomach in order to get it ready for my morning dose of steroids. What a surprise when I heard about the recall and what a relieve at the same time, realizing that this could be a solution to all my problems! Please read the posts by magda on http://www.voxy.co.nz/national/national-product-recall-bonsoy-soy-milk-very-high-levels-iodine/5/34232?page=1 if youd like to know more details.
How extremely upsetting to read that coffee shop in Coogee is still selling it and playing with customers health!
Thanks to all memebers on this site who are trying to do something about it.
