    lets say someone incurred $5,000 in medical costs, plus heart problems...etc.
    If that happened, and was proven to be the fault of Bonsoy, then fair enough.

    This whole "theres no regulations, so we dont test" is hogwash.
    Hogwash is a very emotive word.

    Please explain why you think its not a valid argument.
    If there is no regulation what is going to make them or anyone else test for it?

    Having read most of the links (I skipped the Wiki, vitamins and about.com as these dont stand a chance of being peer reviewed) at thebonsoydebacle.com.au I note that wherespresso states:

    "Normal Bonsoy consumption can lead to hyperthyroidism"

    The Merck site - a link provided on thebonsoydebacle.com.au site states:

    "Iodine, given by mouth, is sometimes used to treat hyperthyroidism. It is reserved for those in whom rapid treatment is needed. It may also be used to control hyperthyroidism until the person can have surgery to remove the thyroid."

    I also note that the site owner of thebonsoydebacle.com.au

    "...thought it manifestly unfair that this product was able to affect so many people negatively with no obvious prospect of compensation, nor an apology from the distributor.

    How many people did it affect? I wonder how much money would make the site owner feel better?

    There are clear links between iodine and thyroid toxicosis and then the attendant effects such as miscarriage, pregnancy complications, affect to your reproductive system (male and female), serious heart issues.
    Just curious - is there any evidence to show that consumption of Bonsoy caused any of the above?
    Interestingly enough, there was an article on an AFL player (from the bulldogs I think) who got really sick, and they did a number of tests, found a thyroid issue and traced it back to Bonsoy. He lost something like 8kg. He was drinking litres of the stuff in cereal and protein shakes etc.

    Given that I have experienced Bonsoy, it was an outstanding product and I can only hope that its back on the shelves with neccessary changes ASAP. In my opinion, no other soy milk came close.
    Huh?

    I agree with TG in that there does not seem to be any standards on maximum iodine content in food. Indeed, our problem in Aus is that we are generally iodine deficient as we basically have none in our soil and thus we supplement foods with it and govt is looking at expanding the number of products we supplement with it.

    In terms of should have known before it went out...what is the iodine content of one of your cups of coffee? If you do have the answer I am sure I could think of other molecules you have not measured in your coffee - one cannot test everything - one generally tests that which is necessary (that is where food standards exist or a problem becomes evident. A problem has become evident, they are now reacting to this.)

    Oomph, I guess I took your first post to mean that Spiral Foods were knowingly selling dangerous foodstuff and thus you do not want to deal with them. I would disagree with the inference if the inference is correct and give Spiral Foods the benefit of the doubt here personally.

    Finally, high iodine is not something that usually causes any acute illness in a healthy person and thus probably why it is not a standard and also why it is not measured in most of our foodstuffs.

    My comment was regarding quality control.
    As far as I understand there was no quality control issue.
    The controversy surrounds the iodine levels in the product.

    My understanding is that 1 in 7 Australians are iodine deficient and that number increases to 1 in 2 children and pregnant women.

    There is ongoing discussion around ADDING iodine to products to reverse this.
    http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/_srcfiles/P1003-sd13.pdf

    The Recommended Daily Intake levels are:
    * Younger children (1 to 8 years) – 90µg
    * Older children (9 to 13 years, boys and girls) – 120µg
    * Adolescents (14 to 18 years) – 150µg
    * Men – 150µg
    * Women – 150µg
    * Pregnancy and breastfeeding –250 µg

    However I cant find an Australian Standard for maximum levels in food.
    Therefore, if there is no Australian Standard, then there was no Quality Control issue.

    Coffee Talk: Im just thinking about how many products we have all used where there might have been quality control issues? I generally dont attempt to make an informed comment on products that I have no experience of. I find that it decreases the liklihood of having to remove my foot from my mouth Roll Eyes.

    Given that I have experienced Bonsoy, it was an outstanding product and I can only hope that its back on the shelves with neccessary changes ASAP. In my opinion, no other soy milk came close.

    So who attempted to give an informed comment?
    My comment was regarding quality control.
    The fact is that the product should never have gotten out as it was.
    Thats my personal opinion, and so I DO NOT have my foot in my mouth.
    Maybe you should show more integrity when it comes to issues of quality control? The injustice of allowing the product to go out like that causes some folk to get a little heated.
    Thats how I feel about equipment too.

    Sure does buck the trend!! We enjoyed the art we were capable of with the bon soy, twas so velvety. Maybe our customers are sick of change ( we throw different single origins and blends at them daily)
    Possibly.
    I hope you offer them a regular SO or blend every day.
