Re: To fill grinder with beans or not?
Ive done both, I used to leave beans in the hopper overnight and copped a serve from the snobs so now I clean the hopper and throat out every use and replace beans into zip lock bag.
To tell you the truth though, and remember I drink milk coffee, I dont think I could taste any discernible difference. BTW, with the Mazzer grinder, the grind seems to be fairly consistent regardless of weight of beans in the hopper.

due to light but doesnt stop the degradation from oxygen.Originally posted by 7F584E5C44370 link=1266400146/18#18 date=1266706140I have an M4 that has a smokey coloured hopper which apparently stops the beans from degrading

Re: To fill grinder with beans or not?
My results pretty much the same as youve described. I keep 2-3 days worth of beans in the hopper, and theres no discernable taste difference.Originally posted by 49435641414E5A5C2F0 link=1266400146/19#19 date=1266708418Ill second that.
I have switched from only adding enough beans for a shot or two to keeping about 200grams or so in my (short) hopper - enough for about 3 days. Its not a tinted hopper but Ive moved the grinder away from the window.
I must say I havent noticed any degradation in that time, an improvement even. Ive noticed a kind of ammonia-like smell from some beans - as though they arent breathing properly while sealed in the 1-way valve bags.
Also, Ive noticed a slight improvement in the grind with the extra weight of beans. The last shot from a batch always seems to show the worst pour.
And like you, Im getting a better grind with a weight of beans in the hopper.

*My grinder is well away from any sunlight; and
*My beans dont last long enough to really degrade - I go through about 250g in two or three days anyway.
Each to their own, I guess - I dont notice any difference whatsoever in the beans and their taste over a short period of time, and only minute adjustments are needed to the grinder every couple of days.

Re: To fill grinder with beans or not?
Just to weigh in on the other side of the coin, I leave my beans in. Having said that:-
- I have an M4 that has a smokey coloured hopper which apparently stops the beans from degrading;
- My grinder is well away from any sunlight; and
- My beans dont last long enough to really degrade - I go through about 250g in two or three days anyway.

The M4 has a guard in it which I cant get off, so putting a bag in on just what I need is not an option without breaking the guard off, so Ill keep going the way I do I guess.
I also did the same when I had my Sunny 0480 - I tried both ways at different times, either full or add as I go (it was similarly away from sunlight) and also couldnt taste any difference at the time.
I guess it comes down to how honed your palate is in being able to spot the subtle differences, where your grinder is positioned, and how quickly you go through the beans.
Cheers

Re: To fill grinder with beans or not?
I put more than enough into the hopper, grind what I need to get a good dose, and after everything else is finished, I empty the hopper back into the bean storage to keep them fresher, works for me with my grinder.
In regards to the question does it taste any different if you only put in what you need?.....Depends a bit on the actual grinder you are using, some are more or less prone to beans playing ping-pong in the chute if you dont weigh them down,
certainly I can say with my Rocky, that I seem to get more consistent dosing and pours with extra beans in the hopper, but I have not done any proper taste comparisons, however I dont need to make consistency in dosing a more challenging task.

Re: To fill grinder with beans or not?
Your best bet is to try a couple of shots back to back with different levels of beans in the hopper and see if you notice the difference.Originally posted by 3821262F3827262F480 link=1266400146/13#13 date=1266488748Hi, noobie question. I seem to recall Chris from Talk Coffee saying you need a certain level of beans in the hopper for bean mass (or something) so that the grinds are consistent.
Being the only coffee drinker in the house, would putting in only enough beans for a single shot have a noticeable effect on the grind? Has anyone tested the difference?
I took the hopper off to grind a few beans to waste that were in the grinder and they bounced everywhere before being ground

Re: To fill grinder with beans or not?
Put me down for "only what i need" in the grinder.
I used to weigh the beans then put them into the hopper..now i know roughly by where in the hopper im filling to.

Re: To fill grinder with beans or not?
Place a shot load into my hand grinder at home (full hopper) and virtually ZERO wastage
Really stopped using my electric grinders for just me and only use them when I have to make a few in a row. But then only just the correct beans for the session.
A few times where I have been short on roasted beans to halp age them a little quicker I have put some of the roast in the hopper, and for the same reason you shouldnt leave them there normally.

Re: To fill grinder with beans or not?
I only put the amount of beans i need for that particular shot. The rest are stored in the cupboard in an airtight container. Seem to work well for me. 8-)

Re: To fill grinder with beans or not?
Im the same, although i tend to put in about 100g at a time.Originally posted by 4E7B6C6E5E667B6468656D090 link=1266400146/1#1 date=1266400317I prefer to have only enough beans in the grinder for the cup of coffee Im currently grinding. The rest stay safe in the one-way valved bag.

Re: To fill grinder with beans or not?
Smithy, I found that when I used my sunbeam grinder, and only put a few beans in the grind was very different, than having a large amount of beans in. It seems they are affected by wieght. If you do a search you may find an old thread on it. I think some C/Sers used a balloon filled with something like rice to stick in their hopper to act as extra wieght.
