Far from a comprehensive literature review, but this is what I found in having a quick look in my Obstetrics and Gynaecology textbooks

    Caffeine

Armstrong and associates (1992) reported that women who consumed at least five cups of coffee per day had a slightly increased abortion risk, and that above this threshold, the risk correlated linearly. Similarly, Cnattingius and colleagues (2000) observed a significantly increased abortion risk only in women who consumed at least 500 mg of caffeine daily—roughly equivalent to 5 cups of coffee. Klebanoff and associates (1999) reported that pregnant women in whom levels of the caffeine metabolite, paraxanthine, were extremely elevated had a twofold risk for miscarriage. They concluded that moderate caffeine consumption was unlikely to cause spontaneous abortion.

    And another text:
a recent extensive literature review of the effects of caffeine concluded that pregnant women who consume moderate amounts of caffeine ( 5–6 mg/kg/day) spread throughout the day and do not smoke or drink alcohol have no increase in reproductive risks.

I have been trained to tell expectant mothers that two "standard" coffees per day will not pose a risk to the pregnancy.
Very interesting. Thanks Pavoniboy. So 1-2 cups is safe. Five cups is way too much.

Heres the NSW food authority page on what to eat and not eat in pregnancy. At the bottom of the page is the NSW Health recommendation on caffeine. It indicates 200mg of caffeine per day is okay while pregnant (it says thats about 2 cups of coffee):

The only time a coffee gave me heart palpitations and caused me to feel quite ill was when I was out in the bush with a few mates (about 20-25 years ago) and the only coffee available was some kind of very dubious "Caterers Blend" that one of the blokes snaffled from somewhere....

One teaspoon of this stuff in an enamel mug with milk and two sugars was absolutely lethal. And I wasnt the only bloke that this caused problems for. I really enjoy a good strong brew, so long as the coffee is decent, and have never had this happen to me before or since. With this particular stuff, it was the case of how much coffee was blended in with the caffeine....

    Mal.

To be honest, one or two cups of latte a day should be okay, just keep away from instant as it has higher levels of caffeine than espresso.
One or two cups is fine - I agree. Though I very much doubt that instant has higher levels of caffeine - as with all coffee-related matters, it depends on how you make it.

    See: http://coffeetea.about.com/library/blcaffeine.htm

That table youre using is comparing a double shot of espresso to a single shot of instant.  Ergo, where the same amount of coffee is in the cup, the one with the instant will be higher in caffeine content.
Im happy to stand corrected, but I still dont think instant has more caffeine - though as I said originally, it depends on how you make your coffee.

Im betting that an average flat white made with espresso coffee has more caffeine than instant ... where both cups have the same volume of liquid. I know I get a much greater caffeine jolt from the espresso I make, than I do from instant.

I drank 2 coffees a day throughout my 4 pregnancies, my kids are all healthy. The recommended intake is between 1-3 caffeinated drinks daily depending on which doctor you speak to.

Personally I would go on the safe side and minimize coffee and anything else that could "potentially" harm a baby. I would want to give the baby its best chance of a healthy start. But hey my parents smoked they had me and Im ok banans purple rain and dust shelter bush.
