    The Best of Panama auctions just closed and the Esmeralda Special sold to Saza Coffee in Japan for US$170.20/lb

    $400 a kilo!!!!

    Roast that one with care guys.

      The strange thing is that in the Esmeralda auctions last week they could have bought for US$20-$35/lb

        You could get the Geisha at about $25 kg or so though Lots PA-04 and 05 went for over $35kg

          Yeah sure you buy the Geisha at 25kg and at about 50kg each it works out to be around $1250.

          But the maintenance is the kicker. Those robes dont come cheap and you have all that white make up to buy and they charge through tea like you wouldnt believe.

                Seven Seeds brought some from last weeks Auction so there will be some around this side of Christmas I guess in Melbourne

                I think as more of the Geisha becomes available again the price should get back closer to "normal". As to that price above I am sure some of it is "we have brought the most expensive coffee in the world" therefore we are the ..... but price per cup at $8+ green for a Syphon brew must put the cup price at $20+ if not $30+

                  yes they did but in the US$30/lb space... not the US$170/lb!

                  As for price per cup, well at US$30/lb it will still land here at AU$1-$2 per cup after roasting so the $8 figure or even $10 would still leave a fair margin for hot water and doing the dishes I think.

                  JBM can be bought for $10/cup in some cafes and at the end of the day its "just JBM", I think the costs of syphon in a commercial setting (how many cups per hour?!?!) help justify a greater margin but time will tell just what the market will pay for a unique coffee.

                    Clover of Esme at Seven Seeds was $7 I think last time I had one and retail $25/250g

                      And of course, coffee alchemy is selling esmerelda pour-overs for $3 a pop in Marrickville. But marrickville doesnt have the cool factor ;D

                          Hi guys,

                          One point that I think needs to be made is that there are differences in the coffees that we are discussing. Not all geishas taste the same, not all panama geishas taste the same and not all esmeralada lots taste the same. For example, the la carleida geisha was delicious; I thought that it had a fair bit of tea to it, together with cream and apricot. The kayser geisha was delicious; I thought that it tasted of mango and the bergamot in the aftertaste was there, but not as strong as some other geishas. The 2009 mario esmeralda lots were delicious; I thought that it had heaps of mandarin, some mango, together with heaps of bergamot, tea and a bit of a floral presence. The 2009 esmeralda lot #1 - I think that it was called reserva de la senora or something similar - was delicious; I thought that it had a bit of mandarin, a bit of bergamot and was generally flatter than the mario lots. Esmeralda is something special and unique; even when it is on the cupping table with other panama geishas, it tends to stand out. If you read through the judges tasting notes from the BOP auction, many of them noted when they thought a coffee was a geisha varietal and a few of them even noted when they thought a coffee was Esmeralda or like it (and from memory they were correct in their assumptions).

                          I think that one of the interesting things about the Esmeralda auctions over the past few years is that they allow us to start to put numbers on the value of hype, branding and prestige attached to "number one" as a lot descriptor. In last years auction, from memory, lot #1 fetched something like USD 110/lb, whereas lot 4 fetched USD 35/lb, the next highest price. So thats something like 3x the price. I thought that lot #1 was overshadowed by the others, so perhaps one could bump that multiple up even more on that basis. This year, the BOP winning lot took about, what, 5x what the auction lots did. So I think that we can start to see an indication that the market - or certain parts of it - value hype/branding/prestige/bragging rights at about 4 to 5x what the cup alone is worth. There are, however, at least two pretty significant caveats. First, the 2009 sample roasts that I tasted might have favoured one lot over another due to variation in sample roasts - I dont think that was the case, but I cant discount it. Second, the BOP winning lot might well be a special prep that is totally different from the auction lots and noticeably better - in fact, it would surprise me if that werent the case. Someone who actually knows something about economics will no doubt have more insightful comments than I do about that, but I think that its still pretty interesting to start thinking about it in these terms ...

                          At any rate, I think that its great that Esmeralda is a coffee that will be presented to customers as an expensive coffee because it has a very distinctive taste and not because it has passed through an animal or been picked by workers in a first world country. In doing so, though, I think that people selling it need to be honest and clear to people about what they should expect so that if people arent interested in it they can look for something else. This is probably not ever going to be made commercially as an espresso. I have made espresso with it before and it was great, but the massive bergamot did come across as almost bitter. This is also not a coffee for people who like heavy body and low acid. Rather, this is a coffee that will present amazing aromatics and fruit over a clean and sweet canvas, with a level of acidity dependent on the roast, but always a key feature of the taste experience.
