I looked, Mal, oh i looked.
Sadly i couldnt find as much as a sniff of a single ridgeless basket (or even much discussion on it, anywhere), Bezzera or otherwise.  :-[
I think Gaggia also make one for their machines (convertible to pods). Have you tried contacting either Barazi or Di Bartoli as if anyone can help you out, these guys should be able to...

Heres a photo below of the basket from my BZ-35... Cant sell it to you though as my son already has dibs on it.

    Mal.

        Re: Single basket, stuck puck

Bezzera supplied a ridgeless single basket with my Galatea (a few months ago) so as Mal suggests give Barazi a call and Rancillio used to supply one with new Silvias, I have one of each.
Why not put a wanted request in the site classifieds? most people seem to dislike the singles, there must be a Silvia owner willing to part with one.

Interesting KK, just comparing my single from Bezzera with your photo, mines a totally different basket, much larger perforated area and smaller shoulders, as has been said before I doubt Bezzera make them, so perhaps on occasion they use baskets from different suppliers.

I believe that my basket is the 9 grams capacity

I had the same one on the Galatea

This thread has caused me to revisit the single basket, 9 grams sounds about right, have been playing with it for a couple of days, the one Im using will hold 11 grams and not contact the shower screen, might start another thread re results.

                Re: Single basket, stuck puck

I tried the new, slightly bigger 7g ridged single basket this morning and finally im able to knock it out.

It takes a couple of knocks but its far better than having to scoop the stuck puck out with a spoon.

I also bought a slightly bigger 14g double so im keen to try that out when i get home this arvo to see if i get any noticeable difference in the cup from the higher capacity basket.

Yet again thank you all for the help, lads.

                  Re: Single basket, stuck puck

Ristrom, I have exactly the same setup as you and use the VBM single basket everyday and it knocks out perfectly every time.

I wonder what your dosing, tamping and leveling technique is. I wonder how you level. If you dont take some out below the rim you cant lock the group handle in. How do you do this? I use scott callaghans dosing tools and get good consistent results with the single. Im sure we can solve your problem without buying another basket.

                    Thanks for the response, barri.

I already picked up another slightly bigger single basket which cost next to nothing and has solved the problem of the stuck puck, thankfully.

My routine is basically dose, collapse, dose, collapse, dose and then level off NSEW with my finger, followed by the tamp, a slight tap on the tamp mat and finally another light tamp.

Ive used the Dosing Tools (number 2 in the small set, from memory) with the single once or twice and the stuck puck issue remained.

No idea what the problem was but as i said in the OP, ive been very happy with the results in the cup (with both baskets) so it was more an issue of frustration and inconvenience at continually having to scoop the belligerent out of the single rather than a problem with my extraction.

                      Ridged or ridgeless?

                        Re: Single basket, stuck puck

                        Ridged.

At that stage i couldnt find a ridgeless single (or even much to suggest they actually existed) so i went with the bigger ridged single.

                          Re: Single basket, stuck puck

I always find that my single basket fails to knock all the puck out. Always leaves a ridge of grounds around the ridge in the basket. I have always just tapped the main part of the puck out then run a clean tissue around the ridge to dislodge the remainder. A little messy (it goes onto a page from old catalogues in the sink & thence into the bin) but quick & effective. Its the shape of the basket with that ridge thats the cause.

I dose a little differently than you with the single. I dose tap and then rest the (heavy) tamper in the basket which settles the bottom of the puck, then dose, tap, "level" using dosing tools then firm tamp. This extra soft tamp at the start of the dosing routine helps produce an even puck which is necessary with the shape of the single basket.

Try that ristrom and see if that helps! Works for me
