Funny to see this topic after a morning of roasting beans while drinking coffee & listening to music. Todays favourites were Kruder & Dorfmeister - Conversions, Thievery Corporation - TheOuternationalSound & Deep Dish - George Is On.

And just right for those lazy Sunday afternoons on the back veranda is a compilation from Putamayo, Music From The Coffee Lands. World music stuff that is very cruisey.
I also think the John Butler Trio and coffee mix quite nicely 8-) Mind you any music and coffee mix nicely!

Me thinks there is a very tenuous relevance between these music posts and coffee. Its turning into a discourse about music tastes and compilations..... and not coffee.

Re: Music to drink coffee by
Well heres a good question for a music teacher... lets see
You can go funky:
and I would recommend some acid jazz such as- The Brand New Heavies (any album by this awesome group) esp "Midnight at Oasis"
- Jamiroquai esp something laid back like "This Corner of the Earth"
- George Benson "Masquerade"
You can go jazzy:- Ella Fitzgerald (vocals) - esp her singing any of the Gershwin songs
- Miles Davis (trumpet) - Kind of Blue album
- Herbie Hancock - "Maiden Voyage" or "Watermelon Man"
- Keith Jarret (piano) - The Koln Concert
- Dave Brubeck - Take Five
You can go daggy, but kinda cool (in a retro way):- Burt Bacharach compilation albums
- The Carpenters - Rainy Days and Mondays
- Lionel Ritchie
You can go soundtrack- Soundtrack from The Mission (Enio Morricone)
- Any Stephen Sondheim compilation albums
- Lion King - Broadway Musical version
- The Firm - Dave Grusin plays funky New York style jazz piano
- The Fabulous Baker Boys - modern jazz
You can go folk rock:- Randy Crawford - So Far Away
- Simon and Garfunkel -
You can go Classical:- Mozart - Clarinet Concerto in A (highly recommended)
- Vivaldi - Four Seasons
- Bach - Air on a G String
- Faure - Requiem
- Thais - Meditation
- Rachmaninoff - Vespers (so gorgeous!)
- Beethoven - Second Movement from Symphony No. 7
- Mozart - Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (A little night music)
- Allegri - Miserere
- Holst - Jupiter from "The Planets"
You can go A Cappella- The Idea of North
- Take Six
You can go Opera- Bizet - Pearl Fishers Duet
- Mozart - Soave sia il vento from "Così fan tutte"
- Delibes - Flower Duet from Lakme
- Puccini - Nessun dorma from Turandot
- Gershwin - Summertime from Porgy and Bess
- Puccini - Un bel dì (One fine day) from Madame Butterfly
You can go laid back, soulful and smooth- Luther Vandross
- Al Jarreau
- George Benson
- Eva Cassidy - Songbird Album
- Roberta Flack
You can go Latin- Antonio Carlos Jobim - Girl From Ipanema
- Buena Vista Social Club
- Tito Puente

Re: Music to drink coffee by
For me it would have to be some Floyd (thats Pink Floyd) or the DVD of the Eagles Melbourne Concert
It all comes done to what you like.
If we all liked the same thing it would be a boring world. ;D

Pat Metheny Group - Still Life (Talking)Originally posted by dford99 link=1165485996/0#0 date=1165485996Anyone have any suggestions for good compilations of music to drink coffee by or favourite artists that just put you in that chill out mood?
I have been doing some surfing on the web and there are some compilations in the US by unknown artists but wanted to find something local. Obviously there is the option of making my own (by legitimately backing up my own CDs
) but would like something I am able to give as an xmas gift.

Re: Music to drink coffee by
Personally Im not big on the "Chill Out" category of compilations. Proper chillout music is for when youre buzzed off your head coming down from a rave. Think KLFs Chill Out, or the early Back To Mine series (Nick Warren, Dave Seaman). But a bit far out for regular listening...
Im more familiar with slightly older stuff (90s mostly): Portishead, Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Nitin Sawhney, Tricky, Craig Armstrong, Beth Orton, DJ Shadow, William Orbit, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Mercury Rev. Any of those have excellent albums.
Then we get into the more obscure stuff... All India Radio, I:Cube, Ken Ishii, Mandalay, Mono, The Egg...
Of current stuff, Jose Gonzales is cool. And Im really liking Sufjan Stevens Illinoise at the moment. Emiliana Torrini is also excellent, plus Joanna Newsom.

I would have to say, and I am totally unbiased in this, that you absolutely can not go past side two on vinyl, of Led Zeppelin Two, played preferably on a late seventies / early eighties Kenwood solid state amp, across a 500w per channel pa sound system (such as the one I have in my lounge room...), and, most notably, whilst listening to the track "Ramble On" - seems appropriate some how in the current context!
