  • Light coloured crema

    Its been a while since ive posted, but i have a question. My skill with my Silvia + EM480 combo has developed a fair bit, and all the stars are aligning:

    30 second shot
    good crema
    perfectly dry and solid puck
    tastes pretty good


    but a few problems....the colour of the crema that i get is fairly light coloured, almost clay rather than a darker hazelnut colour...is that normal? Also i get a lot of crema, but it dissipates very quickly; most of it is gone by the time i finish with the milk. Is that also normal?



    The coffee is being made with fresh espresso Wow!

    Dont see a problem then!!

    Dissipating crema is generally associated with over fresh coffee (pre seven days) the light color could be that the brew water is too cold.

        hmm i tried to grind finer but silvia choked...i guess i just have to live wiht light crema.


        Coffee tastes heavenly though

          How long are you heating up your Silvia for? Sounds like your temps are a bit low. Light crema is common if the Silvia hasnt been given a good 30-45 minutes to heat up.

            Light crema could also indicate a lighter roast.

              I idle the silvia for about 30-45 minutes before i do the shots. I also do a blank shot right before to make sure the PF is well and truely heated up.

              For the actual shot i cycle the boiler until the light turns off, then I run it a bit to get rid of the steam (until the PSSSSSSSSHHHHHH sound goes away) and do the shot right away.

              anything else i need to do temp wise?

              Hmm, ive tried several different blends, the espresso wow is latest, but all have got pretty light crema.

                another question

                the 60ml in 30sec guide (i know its only a rough guide of times). Does it measure from when we hit the brew button or when coffee starts coming out? Because there can be a fair few seconds before anthing appears from the sprouts.

                  Use the Advanced search function..

                  If ya can think of a Question.. Then some one has before.

                  It also stops the topic from going OFF Topic as like most things there are different views and many possible outcomes.

                  As soon as ya hit / toggle the start of teh process.
