Re: 14 Grams of coffee in a single shot

I need a double to get a decent amount of good quality espresso/ristretto for a single "mug" size drink (300-350mL). I dont think my doubles could do 2x190 or 2x220 as theyre blonding rapidly at 15mL a piece.

Im just wondering what others prefer in getting 25mL out of a double basket - 25mL in 25 seconds or 50/2mL in 25/2 seconds (ie. the supposed double pour rate of 50mL in 30 seconds, but cut off half way through to yield 25mL).

I think Im getting the best flavour with a slow pour.

not being facetious but really, if you like what you are doing for your coffee supply and equipment, then thats great, its an individual thing.

It seems to me singles are a waste of time. In order not to use almost as much coffee as a double (and wasting it therefore), you need to weigh it accurately then use a special tamper to tamp it correctly, as the coffee only fills the middle of the basket.

If you fill it to the top and so can then use a normal tamper you end up with almost as much coffee in it as for a double.

I'd be interested why every espresso machine comes with a single basket when practically nobody uses them.
