I actually like the green pack of Lavazza when im too lazy to roast
tastebuds in my butt some morning, yeah maybe, but at least it taught me to appreciate the fresher stuff,
sometimes it does actually help to reset your tasty buds :P

The stuff hasn't improved since the OP in 2011.

Strange how these old threads come back to life.

Something that came out of this thread for me is that it is a really good idea to try something completely different every now and then as it a great 'reset' for your palate.
I like to do a bottle of young fruity red every few bottles of quality aged red - gives the palate a gee-up!
Likewise with bean. Even if you are drinking the best your palate gets jaded and you fail to appreciate it. Nothing like a (small preferably) bag of Merlo or something similar to make you appreciate a bag of quality bean.

I can't help feeling your comment is a little tongue-in-cheek Rocky. However, it is a sentiment shared by James Hoffman. His principle is don't seek out bad flavours but don't turn them down either. Helps you appreciate the good stuff. https://youtu.be/tU1y7hBSgiY
I suppose it depends how often you get offered it...

Not at all, I have always maintained that if you only ever experience the best of anything it quickly becomes the norm.

A regular diet of good allows us to marvel at exceptional whenever we experience it.

And of course, as Rocky says, delving into the ordinary now and again certainly gives a greater appreciation of quality.

It's a bit of a metaphor for life, really.
Easy to be so blase about our good lives until you see someone who has really had a bad trot and you have a bit of a reassessment.

It's been more than a decade since my 'end of innocence' but there's one Lavazza product which I still love for my moka pot - Crema e Gusto.

Worst, they sell it only pre-ground. I don't know what black magic they run on it, I usually can get only 3-4 month old packs, but to me it tastes lovely as a moka pot cappuccino with sugar added for good measure. It's a classic 2nd wave taste - very dark roast, most likely blended with Robusta but nonetheless a very nostalgic taste for me.

Don't need cheap beans. My barista skills allow me to renew my appreciation for fine coffee with borderline sink shots finessed from premium beans.

Lately I've been alternating the CS Ethiopian Sidamo Ardi Naturals with bags of WOW.
This works well for me because they are very different tasting high quality coffee and just when the novelty of the lighter more citrus Ethiopian is wearing off I go to something different.
By the time my palate is becoming complacent about the richness of the WOW it gets hit with the freshness of the Ethiopian again.
Even my non-CS Son who joins me for home-made coffee on weekends comments on the pleasant contrast of the two beans.
It is like wine drinking. The contrasts between varieties and Makers is where the interest lies.

Interesting. I've just read an older long thread on Home barista about the Italian espresso brands. They have their following. I'm going to try some, but I think will need to import to get fresh enough.

Ordered Lavazza Super Crema and Kinbo Superior from Seattle Coffee Gear via a forwarding agent to me here in NZ. I have a VBM and Niche. Will be starting with the recommended 14g ristrettos in a standard double basket. Will freeze the beans in small bags.

When you have so many great NZ roasters at your door, you'd have to ask why? Neither will be fresh when they arrive.

Have to admit it seems a highly unusual strategy to me, coal to Newcastle type of thing.

Read the home barista thread, and other similar ones there before commenting. That's what inspired me.
