Re: Do you wipe or wash?
I usually rinse it under the tap and then use it to backflush my machine after Im done with it. The hot water from the backflush is sufficient to clean the portafilter, and Ill wipe dry after. Doesnt feel oily at all once all that is done.

Re: Do you wipe or wash?
Same as Andys. Ive always knocked out the puck, wipe then return to machine. After about 8-10 pours or when theres too much residual oils at the tip of the spouts, I will remove the baskets, rinse portafilters and clean the baskets, brush and clean the group heads, dry everything then return the portafilters to the machine.

Re: Do you wipe or wash?
Remove from machine
Wipe
Dose
Pour
Knock out
Wipe
and return to machine (not too tightly).
I used to rinse but I think it slipped from my standard "routine" after a couple of big days on the machine. I didnt really know I stopped the rinse cycle until I read this thread and thought about it.

Re: Do you wipe or wash?
Am I out of step?
I wipe (shower head as well) then flush and wipe dry.
On the machine the water is hotter and under pressure.
I would imagine commercially this would be too slow.

Forte: yep ! 13,000 people through the gate, us and one other little coffee van.
160 litres milk, a little over 6.5kg beans
3kg hot choc
And about 20 coffees wasted as people didnt want to wait 15 minutes....luckily it was paid on order ! :P

Re: Do you wipe or wash?
At work I wipe, and wash all group handles periodically when time permits after each of our coffee rushes.
At home I wash then wipe dry before each shot.

Re: Do you wipe or wash?
That presumption is correct!.....no time for rinsing before each shot....baskets are wiped out with a dry clothOriginally posted by 555C420706360 link=1310509434/0#0 date=1310509434I know that in a commercial environment (I presume due to time contraints and praticality) most Baristi tend to knock out the spent puck, then wipe out the basket with a cloth.
Shouldnt you have fingers of steel from all those karate chops!......anyway ya get a nice callous on the index finger after a couple hundred thousand mazzer SJ lever pulls. :POriginally posted by 625E4358525344515952360 link=1310509434/11#11 date=1310538332My dosing lever finger still bears the scars

Re: Do you wipe or wash?
Am so glad someone asked this question. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong by rinsing after each pull :-?
Grind, tamp, pull then knock followed by quick rinse and wipe with paper towel.

Re: Do you wipe or wash?
Probably; we did set a new record that day. Actually ran out of beans and had to send out for more.Originally posted by 406D696568040 link=1310509434/12#12 date=1310541619Pretty darn good TG ... And I bet 99% of the shots were real goodns too....
The real hero of the day was the boss as he not only made the milk for all the coffees buts also the chais, teas and hot chocolates.
My dosing, shot pulling, knocking and cleaning routine was as per his instructions.
