Gloria Jeans funded a charity called Mercy Ministeries, a charity run by a pentacostal christian cult or sect called the Hillsong Church
I have heard several indside stories about how this church operate - unscrupulous bunch. One of the reasons I wont step into a GJs.

Also, Im just not a fan of big franchises. The Brisbane landscape seems dominated by them - politics aside, theyre just so homogenous and boring.

Since were come off topic here already, Ill throw in my 5c:

If we were to start a CoffeeSnobs religion, you know, based on treating the puck with the respect it deserves before it reaches the holy knock box, would that mean that I can tax-deduct my expenses on green beans as charitable donations?

I mean, if Sweden acknowledges digital piracy as religion, I reckon weve got good going here!

That idea is pretty consistent with the quest to obtain the "God Shot". But is it the God Caffeine or the God Crema?

And does that make us "Coffee Fundamentalists" rather than mere "Snobs"

Now this is an idea I could really get behind.

Were gonna need a place of worship, some holy writ, religious icons (original La Marzocco saturated group patent drawing?), saints, prophets...

Ill kick things off with a few Commandments:

Remember the roasting day, to keep it holy.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbours machine, unless its really pretty.

Thou shalt not spill (the milk)

Brew unto others as you would have them brew for you.

Haha, groan worthy, but I love a good pun - and a bad one even more!

Gives a new meaning the words consecrated ground(s). :P

              Re: Muffin Break Coffee

Seriously blokes this is not  a coffee house it is a themed eatery chain store with coffee machine, and will suffer from the same problems as the great majority of "cafes" eg, lack of knowledge of importance of relationship of Coffee Grinder to beans and machine, and a miriad of other "barista" variables.

So one of their chain stores is not going to produce the same coffee, with the same beans, as another of their own chain stores, excpet if they have either, very vigilant franchisees that oversee their staff well OR, the franchise has very vigilant trainers that keep doing the rounds over and over as they should with a view to a certain level of standardisation across the board.

So whats new in any of that?

No, no, its a triune figurehead of God the Caffeine, God the Crema, and God that tastes good in the cup, which together make the God Shot.  Ever since Cane Sugar made a bad coffee for his brother Able-bar-ista that had to be flavoured with too much sugar, we snobs have tried to return to the path of absolute perfect extraction... :

                  Re: Muffin Break Coffee

Really the best way is to go find out for yourself. One coffee isnt exactly expensive and if its up to your standard, great. If its not you lose $3.60. Its not a huge ask.

                    Re: Muffin Break Coffee

Ive had one coffee from Muffin Break and it wasnt too bad, but it seemed to be hideously priced - $5.00 for a 12oz in an outer suburb, which is about what I pay in the middle of the City for a 16oz. This, in itself has got me not going back in the future (and I did point this out to the girl making the coffee but dont think she was very interested in my feedback). She did grind to order and seemed to know what she was doing.

Regarding GJs though - even before I became a CoffeeSnob and really knew good from bad, I hated their coffee. At the time, all I could express it as was burnt and tasted horrible. I think, with the knowledge i now have, it is probably their beans, because it didnt differ between coffee makers and it didnt matter what store i went to.

Its a sad reflection that, even to this day, Id rather be forced to drink a Maccas coffee before a GJs one (but preferably neither!)

Hmmm, forced to consciously choose the lesser of the two evils?  :-[

                        Re: Muffin Break Coffee

Yup - Like when youre driving between Brisbane & Newcastle with two kids in the car and youre hanging out for a caffeine fix & passing through a place that has either a GJs in a shopping centre, or a McCrappe outside, I will go to the McCrappe...

But, fortunately, it is a rare occurrence!

                          Re: Muffin Break Coffee

I had the good opportunity to try Muffin Break coffee last year, only because they had a coffee and muffin special going.

It was surprisingly good, speaking as a Snob.

I noticed that this particular franchise outlet had a clean machine( ie steam wand that is free of milk crusted on) and clean work bench with everything in order and no loose grounds around the grinder. They used fresh milk and did not re-steam milk.

If you try a place that has those attributes, the chances are you may well get a good cup of coffee.
