I have intended to come by and visit Dimattina when I can squeeze it in between work trips up to Osborne Park.  I dont know that I can come today or even how you guys work your tasting sessions: would I be welcome to join if I can make it?  Shall I bring anything?  Samples of what Ive been roasting (such as there are)?

    Hi David,

As Gary S said, please feel free to drop by.  The sessions for the foreseeable future are Wednesdays at 1pm every week.  You are very welcome to bring along anything youve roasted at home and Ill add it to the line-up, but apart from that just bring yourself.  We like to keep the sessions friendly and casual so dont worry if you havent done anything like cupping before, well explain it all.

Thanks for the great session today guys, it was really great to get your opinions on those coffees.  Next week Ill do another triangulation and throw in some CoEs.  Ill also roast all the samples myself this time round so we can have a bit more of a mix around.

    See you then

    Jono

      Re: Perth, WA

Thanks, Jono and Gary for the welcome.  Now that I know the fixed schedule for it, I will try and attend as much as I can - I have a weekyl meeting at 1:30 but it is occasionally cancelled, so I will block this in as my alternate.  Very excited to sit down and learn how to taste coffee better.

Awesome! Jono, that was so cool and I wish I could have stayed longer, but work beckoned! VERY COOL! It was nice to meet the rest of you.

Greenman, I welcome your comments on my burnt offering . Though I wouldnt blame you if you left it for the weekend. The rest of that roast already went to a co-worker.

            Re: Perth, WA

Had a blast doing my first cupping, managed 2 out 5 correct guesses, my palate needs some more development! I would describe them all as "very delicious"! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Thanks Jono and Simon for the opportunity, and it was great to meet fellow CSers!

Hope to be able to attend again sometime in the future.

            Cheers

Also 2 out of 5 for me. Both the sets that contained a Brazil, which is the only origin I have much experience with on the table. I learned:

              1) Ive got a long way to go when it comes to cupping; and
              2) I like Rwandan coffee.

way too dark for me, the roast flavours dominated, reminiscent of some of my earlier popper roasts
great triangulation cupping with COE samples to tantalise the taste buds
took a few happy snaps of session:--

Thanks for coming along guys was great to see you all

Next cupping session is going to be on Friday next week at 1pm (just a one off because I need to cover a shift in the cafe on Wed). Im thinking Ill continue with the triangulation format next week unless anyone has any objections. Its nice to have a bit of a challenge mixed into the sessions but if anyone would prefer a week to just focus on the coffee characteristics and general discussion let me know.

                      Re: Perth, WA

Hah. If I can make it anything is great since Im starting at zero. I like the triangulation because I think I need to be able to differentiate between flavours before I can properly identify them.

                      Jono, once again: amazing experience!

Greenman, cool pics. Also, thanks for the roast input. I know people keep saying its all down to personal preference, but that isnt going to help me if Im roasting fo others as much as for myself. If I make it next week, Ill bring my Daterra Sweet Collection which I took just into 2nd crack. Itll be at 9 days, then. It wont compare with what you brought - wish Id been able to stay and taste coffee of a bit higher calibre than mine!

                        Re: Perth, WA

Thanks again guys for the great session on Friday, lots of talented palates around I think. Also thanks to those who came along to our barista jam later on, I hope you enjoyed yourselves We are planning on making this a regular event (either monthly or 6-weekly) which you are all invited to should you wish to come. For those of you who werent there its basically just a chance for us to have a play on the La Marzocco FB-80 make up new latte art designs and drink beer

Cupping will be on Thursday (1pm) next week because I have to be in the cafe again on Wednesday. I think this time round Ill try not to make the triangulation so tough (no same country, same region, same score ones).

Hope to see you all then

                        Jono

                          Re: Perth, WA

Jono, Im sure that means that youll find some other way to make it tricky... I think Im detecting a pattern.

For example: perhaps 4 random cups will have had a tablespoon of Cafe Aurora Medaglia Oro sprinkled at the bottom of the cup before pouring the other grounds in...

                          Just to mix things up...

Hi Jono, see you Thursday. Glad to hear it may not be as difficult as last week...........not sure if I trust you completely on that.
Great time on Friday evening, really enjoyed it.

Ever since attending my first cupping session, I now always sniff my ground coffee. Its amazing how you can pick up certain tones by sniffing the grounds. The looks I get from other "non snobs" is priceless!! They just shake their heads! [smiley=cheesy.gif]

If anyone has not done it yet, I thoroughly reccomend it, its great fun and a nice learning experience.

                              Cheers

Hey guys, back to Wednesday this week for the cupping   Last one before the cupping competition next weekend so Im a little bit nervous.  My sample roaster decided to give up on me mid-roast last week so for this next session McCartan and greenman have kindly offered their services as guest roasters.  Theyve been loaded up with several CoEs including a #1 ranked sample (no pressure guys).

Once again, anyone is welcome to attend regardless of experience.

                                Thanks

                                Jono

P.S There was talk at the last session about a CS Sunday lunch get-together. Im keen for that (though not next weekend due to the comp). Anyone else?
