Yes, my mind was thinking one thing as my fingers typed another. I meant the extraction amount had reduced, not the time, I still stopped the shot at 26 seconds.

Hi Ausnadian, if youre forced now to updose more from 19gms to 22gms I would have expected your shot time to increase (ie flow slower) if no other change to grind etc. A darker pour does make sense though. Is that what you meant?Originally posted by 4571776A65606D656A040 link=1327631793/28#28 date=1329166841Well, the rice test (cous cous) showed that I was under dosing, I was using 19gms but the rice test showed I needed 22gms, since then my shot times have reduced a couple seconds, though the coffee produced hasnt really jumped in flavour, in fact side by side, the shots only difference was the 22gm shot was darker to look at but taste was very difficult to discern.

Maybe if it was a high end machine the difference would be more noticeable, but in the Silvia, it didnt make or break anything really. Will try again with the Costa Rican when its ready in a couple days, maybe the different beans will show a better result.

Thank you saoye! I have been playing around with tamping/dosing since I got my PST baskets and Pullman tamper. I havent had enough consistency - this is going to be a big help.

Actually i already modified the pullman: took 0.5mm off the diameter because i felt it was a little to tight in the sunbeam. seems perfect in the izzo. a mate now with a minore has asked me to mod his tamper the same after we both upgraded from sunbeams.
i have access to a proper machine shop lathe so not suggesting others try unlees they are confident & have the right gear.

It doesnt make a great deal of sense to alter a precision tamper even if you can esp. when you change it from basket-specific to machine-specific. And presumably this is one reason you bought a Pullman which as I understand it, is a precise fit to basket width not depth but already has guides to help with depth (presumably as this varies).

not sure why i need gregs approval to modify my tamper?
and Im quite happy to bet that ill still be using the izzo in 5 years time ( put up with the sunbeam that long).
The only proviso is i get shot up the b*m with a rainbow and i go out and buy a Kees Van Der Speedster ( but ill need a bigger bench and kitchen and house as well) so i guess a new Pullman would be in order.

Im glad it works for you. Id not recommend you to permanently modify your Pullman Tamper only because firstly I think Greg wouldnt like that Shocked and secondly remember the level is specific to your machine. Who knows wat machine youd have in 5 years time? Work on the existing reference points and a feel of the tamp level. After awhile youll know if youve overdosed, underdosed or its about right. Wink

Out of interest I just measured the tamped dose level in my double with a vernier calipre (not for accuracy or precision but simplicity). It came out to 14.67mm. I dont know if you plan a .5mm high or deep groove but even at .5 high you could easily finish with nearly 2% or .3gm error if using my basket. I reckon I get this range of precision when tamping by eye and feel by knowing my basket and tamper.
If youre using the rice or 5 cent test to determine accurate dose weight (they are both accuracy tests not precision tests), do you really need a permanent mark ?
Just my 5 cents worth. But then I can afford rice but not a precision tamper!

heres a pic of the pullman with the black indelible line- works well.
helps me check qty AND how level i got it.

Urn, u do understand the test is to be done without pulling the shot itself right? Or is that just a statement of curiosity? Not recommended although I think you will have to run a fair amount of hot water to get it remotely cooked.Originally posted by 6B73617A7B7C7E73667B74120 link=1327631793/18#18 date=1328368691I wonder what 9 bars of pressure and 92 degree water would do to rice?? ;D
