Re: Stainless steel repair/ polish
Sadly, thats not always true. As a rule:Originally posted by 6F6873746F6863070 link=1331983066/10#10 date=1332286842Place a magnet on the surface ....... Chrome plated steel will be magnetic ..... Stainless wont.
300 series stainless is non magnetic.
400 series stainless is magnetic.
Your kitchen sink and spoons will be non magnetic but most sheet stainless is the cheaper 400 series and will still be magnetic. It could even be both... 400 series stainless and chromed!
(sorry to add to the confusion!)
As always, if unsure, take it to someone who can point you in the right direction before you dig yourself in.
I would also suggest removing the case and playing on the inside first too.

Re: Stainless steel repair/ polish
Its denfiatly worth a try, when it gets back from its service I will give it a try before taking it in to be replated, thanks

Re: Stainless steel repair/ polish
Maybe its the blackened section thats most annoying. The black part must either bare metal or a residue from whatever rubbed against in transit.
Have you taken to the blackened section with a buffing polish. Buffing alone wont do much.
Look up Micro Mesh or Micro Mesh 1 micron Micro Gloss.
There a version for chrome plus other finishes and metals.
Or try rubbing with a clear or white pencil eraser.
Get a newish one not one resting in the back of a drawer for years.
Rub REALLY hard and dry wipe the rubbing every so often.
You dont want it to get too hot and you dont want to drive the rubbed material into or under any scratch.
Or cut a smallish sheet of alfoil and use it as a cover held in place by kitchen/coffee themed fridge magnets.
Or can this be made to work...
http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1327034692/2
Then you could spend $42 on BeanBay.
Just me maybe...

Re: Stainless steel repair/ polish
Thanks for the tip, its magnetic and there for chrome. Ive tryed buffing it, no dice and I imagine it would be very expensive to get a replacement shell. Ive contacted Vinci chrome and without seeing it they wouldnt give me a definate quote and whether they will do the job but they said should be around $50 so I think thats what I will do

Re: Stainless steel repair/ polish
If its mirror, its most likely chrome. Looks like it to me.
A dentmaster style mob or similar should be able to remove any dings and then Id reckon $50 would cover replating.

Re: Stainless steel repair/ polish
On the side? Put something up against it. You will spend a fortune trying to restore that. Otherwise a bit of graffiti art will cover it and give it character! Or just a plain old sticker ... been anywhere nice lately?

Re: Stainless steel repair/ polish
Difficult to tell on my phone but are you sure its stainless and not chrome plated?
Might be able to polish out if stainless, with a small buff and fine cutting compound. If chrome plate it could be re plated.
Take it to a metal fabricator shop and ask.
Is it brand new or just new to you?
Brand new should be under warranty

Re: Stainless steel repair/ polish
do you have household accidental insurance? it will possibly (mine does) cover anything in-transit TO your house, yes even online purchased goods. For a $250 excess you may be able to get a new skin - but you didnt say what machine? It may or may not be worth it.
