If you want $20/kg, you will receive what you pay for- regardless of where it comes from.
Totally agree. Where I disagree is when you pay $48/kilo here that you get what you pay for. From my experiences you usually dont.

Re: I love Illy but want to buy local

The more replies this thread gets, the more credence it will give to those unfortunate people that have developed such difficult palates that they can only get their fix from o/s.

My response then, would be to respectfully ask all to stop responding with off topic replies especially those to do with importing.

There would be a two fold effect:

      a) most importantly, the OP can get the info that she actually asked for and

      b) secondarily, it will stop or lessen the possibility that some readers will get a false impression that you cant get good or well priced coffee in this great country.

Must say I just dont get it vf...

We have internationally acclaimed, award winning roasters all around the country and the only option is to send yet more $$$ overseas.  :-? :
Ok, before I get crucified for sending money OS, I have tried numerous beans from some Vic roasters (some are sponsors here). A few of the beans Ive bought locally have won awards and they were certainly nice too, however some didnt appeal to me. So Im not saying I cant get good coffee here, what I am saying is the coffee I like, the coffee all our friends comment on how nice it is and my wife likes comes from the US roaster, if their blend was copied here Id buy it locally for sure.
Sometimes taste isnt the final decision on what coffee to use either, weve had some local beans that after one cup (I usually dose 16grams) you feel like youve had 5 Red Bulls, so even though they were nice and I would continue to purchase them, they just didnt agree with me and the Mrs.
So sorry Fresh_Coffee to keep on about the import stuff, but I did want to try to point out that my decision to (currently) buy beans from OS isnt because we cant do a better job here.

I should definitely give the Bean Bay a shot though, thanks.

          Vim,

I am happy to analyse any blend that anyone wishes to send me for the purpose. It helps both the client as well as us because in addition to giving the client what they want, we get the possibility of making sales and we get to "see" what others are doing / liking.

          Thats coffee merchant market research.

It needs to be a reasonable quantity say 500 grams, and it needs to be a serious enquiry for the effort.

If you like, I am happy to swap an equal amount of one of our award winning blends so the enquirer is not "out of pocket" ie left without coffee to drink.
