Re: I love Illy but want to buy local

    Vim,

I am happy to analyse any blend that anyone wishes to send me for the purpose. It helps both the client as well as us because in addition to giving the client what they want, we get the possibility of making sales and we get to "see" what others are doing / liking.

    Thats coffee merchant market research.

It needs to be a reasonable quantity say 500 grams, and it needs to be a serious enquiry for the effort.

If you like, I am happy to swap an equal amount of one of our award winning blends so the enquirer is not "out of pocket" ie left without coffee to drink.

Must say I just dont get it vf...

We have internationally acclaimed, award winning roasters all around the country and the only option is to send yet more $$$ overseas.  :-? :
Ok, before I get crucified for sending money OS, I have tried numerous beans from some Vic roasters (some are sponsors here). A few of the beans Ive bought locally have won awards and they were certainly nice too, however some didnt appeal to me. So Im not saying I cant get good coffee here, what I am saying is the coffee I like, the coffee all our friends comment on how nice it is and my wife likes comes from the US roaster, if their blend was copied here Id buy it locally for sure.
Sometimes taste isnt the final decision on what coffee to use either, weve had some local beans that after one cup (I usually dose 16grams) you feel like youve had 5 Red Bulls, so even though they were nice and I would continue to purchase them, they just didnt agree with me and the Mrs.
So sorry Fresh_Coffee to keep on about the import stuff, but I did want to try to point out that my decision to (currently) buy beans from OS isnt because we cant do a better job here.

I should definitely give the Bean Bay a shot though, thanks.

The more replies this thread gets, the more credence it will give to those unfortunate people that have developed such difficult palates that they can only get their fix from o/s.

My response then, would be to respectfully ask all to stop responding with off topic replies especially those to do with importing.

There would be a two fold effect:

    a) most importantly, the OP can get the info that she actually asked for and

    b) secondarily, it will stop or lessen the possibility that some readers will get a false impression that you cant get good or well priced coffee in this great country.

If you want $20/kg, you will receive what you pay for- regardless of where it comes from.
Totally agree. Where I disagree is when you pay $48/kilo here that you get what you pay for. From my experiences you usually dont.

The prices you pay for top quality beans there is definitely cheaper than what you pay for the same here
    Debatable.

Lower price = lower quality beans. Joe Average (and not so average for that matter) often has no idea, because the blend "tastes good" to him.

The rumours of biggies using low quality, brokens, water damaged, adding old and stale to the cooling pan etc are common. Truth? Who knows...

    over $1 a coffee
All the more reason to buy greens from BeanBay and roast your own. Cheap, easy and great fun.

Lots of places are charging $15 for 250gm factor in dialling in and a bit of wastage and its costing you over $1 a coffee

Sure, but $US30+ per kg (and in fact thats 2lbs so a bit less than 1kg) before postage is hardly that much cheaper...and in fact I can grab a kilo of some of the local site sponsors blends for cheaper than that. Add to that the fact that VFs main reason for going OS seemed to be quality/freshness related.

Im all for trying different stuff, and certainly agree that some local cafe/small roasters are having a bit of a laugh, but they have a business to run and will survive or otherwise according to their decisions.

I am currently buying my beans from Klatch Coffee in California. They win many awards, the coffee costs less than buying here (including postage).
If you can buy better quality cheaper (quality being what appeals to you) by importing then why not? The competition in the USA keeps the prices there down. The prices you pay for top quality beans there is definitely cheaper than what you pay for the same here. And here, if you have the beans posted out to you from and Aussie roaster then the postage adds significantly to the cost. ($10+ per kilo on top of a price already higher than the price of US coffee).

Me, I am lucky to have close to hand a local roaster (non-site sponsor) whose coffee I like and is reasonable. But if I could  get the same for cheaper from OS I would give it a try.

Just on a side note, I find the price of coffee beans sometimes ridiculous here. A local cafe down the road which has its own blend made a local roaster charges $50 per kilo. It is a good blend, but nothing amazing. Many of the well known Aussie roasters charge upwards of $45 for their blends. Too me this is too much, especially if you have to then add postage. It is no wonder that people seek out overseas alternatives (which can be delivered as fresh as the local product) while the high Aussie dollar makes this feasible. As with most products, globalisation puts the Aussie roasters up against international competition.

    Vim,

Stunned that you cant find anything you like among, for example, Andys beanbay roasted, and the latest Ive waited for them to arrive on my door is 3 days post-roast....never had a 22 day wait (and I dont open anything before day 6 anyway). But I guess everyones palate is different.
    Cheers

There are atleast 2 roasters I know of on the Central Coast but cant / wont mention any names here as they are not site sponsors.

...only 7 to 8 days old worst case. Now Ive found coffee of that age sitting in local roasters ready to sell as new, so its not a put off for me.
I am yet to try a coffee which has already peaked at day 7-8 post roast...

We have sponsors who fund this site and who roast as well. None suitable, just an email address for some non-sponsor 1/2 a world away-  the only suitable beans on the planet?  :-?

Why not find a good local roaster, describe what youre looking for and let them match you to a bean/blend?

Yeah, I just Email them as their site doesnt cater for international shipping.
helene@klatchroasting.com , she does the shipping, I tell her what I want, she Emails a PayPal invoice and it arrives on the door a week later.
I usually order Wednesday Aus time, this way it should make it on to the plane for Aus by Friday US time and hit customs here Monday our time, then its just local delivery delays.
I got caught out once when it went via Hawaii, Sydney, Melbourne, the coffee was 22 days old by the time I got it
No idea why that happened, its only been the once thankfully and Ive been ordering from them for about 2 years.

FYI, the beans I order are Klatch House Espresso, usually a 2lb bag, they describe it as tons of crema, its true
Take the time to read over the blogs on their website, some great stories about their trips when sourcing coffee.

Re: I love Illy but want to buy local

Im finding it tough to stay local. I went to the Melbourne coffee expo in the hope of finding a local roaster whos product I liked. The one I did find (and bought a few bags home), its been impossible to try to get the beans without driving for an hour to pick them up (they dont sell direct).

I am currently buying my beans from Klatch Coffee in California. They win many awards, the coffee costs less than buying here (including postage). We just love the house blend they do, it usually takes no more than 5 days to arrive (given the planes go direct from LAX to MEL), they are really good in that they will only ship to us coffee that is a day old, so by the time I get it, its only 7 to 8 days old worst case. Now Ive found coffee of that age sitting in local roasters ready to sell as new, so its not a put off for me.
The reason I want to find someone local is our dollar will at some stage take a dive and it will just be too costly to purchase beans from overseas.

shapeshifter, Im going to send you a PM for the details of the non sponsor Vic roasters.

I thought local beans were beans that were grown in Australia? Locally roasted imported,or locally grown locally roasted, two very different products.
