  • Coffee Makes you live longer

Its now a proven fact with a 400,000 person study (229k men & 173k women).

Research presented by the New England journal of Medicine in Massachusetts by 5 doctors, May 17.

Shows that adjusted hazard ratios for death drops from 1 to .88 for 4 cups (the sweet spot) a day and then rises to .90 up to 10 cups cups! [The research is copyright so i cant present any of it].   0.99<1cup, 0.94=1 cup, 0.90:2-3 cups.

They dont offer any actual reasons why though.  My theory; Perhaps people who drink coffee have more stimulated brains which keeps them active?

So, we can now tell our "i dont drink coffee for health reasons" friends that they will all die younger than us.

Ill stick to my 2 supers in the morning and 1 unleaded in the arvo.

Thanks for the heads up Brettly. Interesting paper, but I think Id be a little bit more cautious about interpreting this (or any positive evidence based on statistical association) as a proven fact (sorry Im a bit of scientific pedant). The article itself clearly states that the nature of their data/tests means that they are unable to distinguish whether this is a causal or associational relationship.

Im doubting with such a large sample size that they could have taken into account the myriad of extraneous variables that are likely to impact upon the results....

Not that I need a reason to continue my drinking habits

cant agree with this comment: in statisitcs it is always better to use a large sample size to get best results. And having the large sample would be better to even out the other variables.

FYI the sample population was from California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina and Pejsilvania so the study is American lifestyle/mortality based not Australia.

I agree that a large sample size is generally better. But how was their sample selected and was anything at all controlled or was it purely random selection?

The other thing Im not sure of is how is an adjusted hazard ratio for death calculated? Was that entire population followed through until their death, with all other medical conditions and poor lifestyle choices accounted for?

I dont know about the veracity of the claim, but....who cares.
Like....we need a reason to drink coffee?
