we had a serious "snails eating the mails" problem in our letterbox. a nice layer of coffee grounds in the bottom of the letter box sorted that right out
all of the rest of the grounds go to the compost and then on to the worm farm and we have no issues...
This may be slightly off-topic, but we have 2 large dogs who occasionally feel inclined to dig big holes in the yard when we are at work. Ive experimented with different materials to put into the holes (looking for a doggy-deterrent of course). Ive found that coffee grounds work really well - the dogs wont dig in the same place after Ive empied the knock box into the hole, then filled over it with soil. (a bit of dog poo works best, but sometimes the holes are dug a bit too close to the house, so thats where the coffee grounds come in handy).
I do realise that this is probably too much information for most people!! :P
Wow, thanks for all your great responses. Great to hear coffee grounds in the compost or garden are actually a good thing. Next time I have a veggie patch Ill definitely try it as a natural pest deterant!
Ive found (as have other) that the Black Soldier Fly larvae particularly love used ground coffee. They are a harmless fly (no mouthparts in adult stage I believe) that accelerates the early stages of composting.
I also use the grounds in my compost. You can also put it around the veggie patch to deter snails/slugs (not sure if true or not, seemed to work for me)
