  • Coffee overseas

    Just had a mate come back from Germany and Italy who said that the coffee in both of these countries was better than what we get here. He works in blues point and knows all the good places.

    Can this be right? What are peoples experiences?

    Unless you know the "good" cafes in the places you visit, you will have to rely on luck or someone elses recomendation for "good " coffee.
    My recent experience of Europe ( UK, France , Belgium, Germany) was not good.
    Too many "franchise" cafes selling commercial warm milky stuff !
    Im sure there are good baristas a plenty over there if you know where to find them, but compared to our local Sydney offerings, most of what we had in Eu was crap !

      Tis all subjective really, What one person defines as "good", another may define as "god-awful-stuff-thats-not-fit-to-poison-rats"

      it all depends on what this Mate of yours drinks on a regular occasion. He might be a fan of International Roast after all.

      Oh, and Germany isnt really known as a famous coffee place, I think Italy and France when I think coffee. Germany is for beernschnapps

        I thought the coffee was not as good as here.

        I tried Paris, Spain, Croatia, Italy, and Rio

        I guess you just need to know the good spots, but I never found them.

          Individual preferences aside, there is good coffee and there is bad coffee. Even if you dont like it a particular way, it is important to be able to tell the difference.
          I have never been overseas (no particular desire to either) but I always had this silly idea that the old cultures would do stuff like traditional food and coffee really well. Not what I hear. Maybe the tourist trade spins off a whole sub-culture of bland, low standard homogenised crud aimed at the global trade.
          My wife keeps threatening to drag me off to Europe when she retires - scary thought being dependent on pot luck in cafes.

            Checked date no its not April First ;D Rubbish coffee is out there even in pretentious Australian suburbs or Italy or wherever. In Melbourne there is far more average to poor coffee than good to great.

              The best coffee we had was in Croatia, just a simple place near a supermarket, 90 euro cents a cup and they had fantastic cheery strudels in the nearby bakery.

                i once had a cup of coffee in deepest, darkest romania. my girlfriend and i were in some dingy little town in the middle of nowhere wasting a few hours waiting for a connecting train (en route to her grandmothers house which is some ways beyond the middle of nowhere) when i spotted a decent looking espresso machine in one of the cafes.

                we went in to see what was on offer and to watch the barista pull a shot - she ground to order (hopper was empty and she manually started it to service each customer), her prep looked very good and professional and she proceeded to pull a shot for another customer. 20 seconds passed and the shot looked lovely. then she kept going. then she kept going. then she kept going. she ended up serving the customer with a full cup of something akin to a long black made up of a decent shot of espresso topped off with the pale blondes of the tail end of a shot that lasted the better part of 2 minutes. the customer accepted this as though this was the norm.

                astonished, but desperately low on caffeine, i thought i could risk this - i asked my gf (native romanian) to order for me and ask the barista to only give me a tiny cup of espresso. i would tell her when she should stop the pour. anyway, she goes through her good prep routine and begins pulling another nice shot and at 20s i call out to stop, but she protests and lets it run. we ask again and eventually she stops the pour at about 30s.

                looking at the tiny amount in the normal sized take away cup, she was agast - she refused to charge us full price for this fractional cup of coffee and looked on in amazement as i finished it 2 mouthfuls, thanked her and left.

                having not even seen a decent cup of espresso in over 2 weeks by this point in our holiday, it was actually quite delicious. I often wonder how this barista learnt so much of her trade, except for when to stop the pour, or if shes added the "australian" to her menu since...

                back on topic, i have found conventional bar style espresso in milan was wonderful. beyond the high standard that is available practically anywhere, seldom in Australia is espresso served as such an experience (at least not along my daily travels). beyond that, europe seems as hit and miss as anywhere else and the same rules apply - you know youre not going to get a good cup from a bakery or in an airport or whatever no matter what country youre in.

                i have had some wonderful coffee in japan by cherry-picking the finest establishments but they are few and far between so Ive also enjoyed plenty of vending machine cans of coffee-flavoured, heavily sugared milk...

                  My mother and sister recently went to Germany and said that the best coffee that they could find was run by an Australian! But the people above me say, what defines good is very personally orientated, unless they take a refractometer with them!

                    sense the best machines come from Italy one would think they would also have the best coffee, dosnt seem to be the case

                      Its certainly what i found in Italy, very consistent quality, better than about 98% of the coffee available in Australia.

                      I spent 2 months in Italy and cant remember a bad coffee.

                      It is partly a taste issue - i dont like the type of coffee that so called 3rd wave cafes make, i prefer espresso, the overdosed, under roasted style used in many cafes in Australia is not to my taste.

                        x 2. I think some are roasting so light now that they may as well just grind and serve the greens. Sour, acidic, occasionally rubbery and tealike. For mine, it can sometimes have merit using manual methods. As espresso- almost always yuck.

                          but since the best coffee (beans) come from Africa (or S America)??)..you might expect they would have the best coffee ?? ;D ;D :-/ :-/ :-/

                            Its certainly what i found in Italy, very consistent quality, better than about 98% of the coffee available in Australia.

                            I agree. For consistency of espressos and low price, Italy is  difficult to beat.

                              I could get a pretty good cup at the free internet cafe

                              in Italy for just 90 euro cents

                              but still not as good as the roasters like Costa Noosa and Pioneer up this way.
