  • A solution to turn on your machine remotely!

Over the past few years I've tried to find a solution that would allow me to remotely turn on my coffee machine remotely. I work odd hours and it would be great to arrive home and have the machine warmed up. I've finally found a solution, although its not yet arrived in Australia. Belkin have launched a set of home automation products under the sub-brand WeMo, which allow you to wirelessly send instructions to a power point using the WeMo app on a smart phone. Looks very promising and they've set up a dedicated Aussie site -- Belkin WeMo Home Automation Switch-Motion -- but no one yet seems to be selling the product.

I've sent an email asking for details of when they anticipate being in market. Will post back when I hear anything, in case anyone's interested.

True, but by the time it arrives here, I wouldn't be surprised if that's been fixed.

Price looks good in the US at $50 but i'll save my excitement until the local price is announced, for now it doesnt seem available in any 220/230v country

Ahh, but there is a small percentage of us would be happy with an Iphone app.

Just found a mention on Belkin's Aussie twitter account -- @BelkinAU -- that they plan to launch WeMo in Australia in November. I'll be sure to pick one up as soon as it's available and report on how I find it.

Andy - you mentioned your disappointment with the lack of Android as an option. It seems promising that they're actively engaged, building community and responding to feedback via getsatisfaction at getsatisfaction.com/belkinwemo, where people have been very frank about how they feel about that issue and others. They state that their intention is to offer Android support in the future.

Fingers crossed that it actually makes it to our shores.

forget your phone, iOS or android. You need to check out ifttt.com (if this then that). It's like a 'cron' tasker for internet services and WeMo is supported.

This means you can interface with your wemo devices using a number of methods. like, SMS to turn on coffee machine.

or even, tweet it, email it, phone it.

heck, you could tell it to only turn on if it's 17 degrees outside.

                    check it out

Hi JamesM - It was actually the IFTTT functionality that first got me interested. I've got my machine on a timer, but this will do that and many other options besides (like use of iPhone to remotely light it up)!

Just a quick update on this. Belkin had announced this was planned to launch this month. It's already in the inventory systems of lots of Aussie IT online stores (Aussie part # F7C027AUAPL, if you're interested...this makes it lots easier to track down). I called Belkin to find out whether its shipped as their Twitter account @BelkinAU had variously mentioned Nov and Dec as timing for the launch. The rep said there's been a delay, but no specific dates are available. Hopefully it'll be available before Christmas madness hits.

Now all we need to do is hook up your steam wand and brew switch to one and you can make your morning cup from your bed with an iphone haha.

Not sure how we solve the portafilter problem though... robot arm from grinder to grouphead?
