I am an absolute sucker for a new cafe. No matter how often I am served over-heated, bubbly milked, under/over-extracted espresso-ed coffee; if I see a new, attractive cafe, I just have to try the coffee. Maybe this time Ill be pleasantly surprised, maybe this time theyll actually have a barista driving the machine who knows how to make coffee as it ought to be made.
Well, this afternoon we noticed a new cafe had opened on the main street in town, with an espresso brand Im not familiar with (I think it was Amici?). The machine looked clean, the hopper of the grinder wasnt yellow with rancid coffee oils, and the steaming arm of the machine was silver, not caked with dried milk!! So, my husband and I though wed give it a go. Its always nice to be able to go out somewhere for coffee, even though we have it pretty fantastic at home.
We couldnt see any examples of their work (place was pretty empty), so we decided the safe option was the flat white. We ordered take away as our 18 month old isnt the most patient of little girls. So we ordered, and watched very carefully as our coffees were made. The espresso seemed to be pouring nicely, not too fast, both of us surreptitiously counting "23, 24, 25" under our breath. So far, so good. Unfortunately, neither of us paid any attention to the milk texturing as we were doing so.
My husband paid for the coffees and picked them up, and as we were walking out the door muttered to me "theyre burning my hands". :-?
So we didnt bother sipping them til we got home a good 5-10 minutes later. Argh! Burnt tongues! Coffee tastes foul! Milk is scalded and just awful!
So we tipped them down the sink; poured ourselves two doppio ristretto lattes of my current blend (Tarrazu:Mandheling:Yirg), sat down, sipped, and sighed with pleasure at the smooth, chocolatey taste. Ah, Mr Giotto, we love you!
(Insert plug for Talk Coffee here
).
But you know, next time I see a new cafe that looks clean and trendy, Ill probably still order a latte. I just cant seem to help it...
