  • Ridgeless Baskets - Do they make more mess for you as well

Is it a commonly experienced issue, or just for me, that when using a ridgeless basket (in my case a VST one), coffee sprays all over the place when you use the knockbox to remove the puck. In my case all over the wall etc if I do not cover it with a cloth first. Never noticed it before using a ridgeless. Possibly its not fitting properly or something, or maybe just the way it is?

Um, definitely not noticed that one Graham... I do find the puck needs a firmer knock to dislodge from the VST basket than my old Synesso baskets, which at least means you know there's a good seal between puck and walls -> no peripheral channelling. But the only 'mess' I've had has been limited to some coffee left behind in the basket which needs a quick wipe to remove, nothing ... er... explosive. Sure the kids haven't chucked some firecrackers in your knockbox??

Nope, knocks out just fine for me, sometimes the puck delaminates a bit but certainly no major mess.

        I've had no problems Graham.

Never ever had a problem and that's including only being able to use my left hand (I'm right handed) for prepping the coffee machine

Bugger - starting to look like it's my set up or technique. :-)

The basket has some slight up/down play, so when I bang it in the knock box, it goes down and forces residual liquid up the sides and all over the place. Was sort of hoping I was not alone.

Ah OK I thought the 'coffee' that went everywhere was parts of the 'coffee' puck, not residual 'coffee' liquid (semantics...!). No I've not had that problem either but that may be fixable; the basket shouldn't easily move in the portafilter. Are you saying the basket can move up and down in the portafilter? It sounds like it's being pulled out of the portafilter slightly when you remove the portafilter from the group so it's sitting slightly proud, and therefore gets slammed back in when you knock the puck out. Normally the stronger spring you got with the basket would hold it in tight enough, are you sure the stronger spring you ordered with your VST basket is in the portafilter? If so and the basket is still moving around you could try bending the spring a bit to create more spring pressure. As a test next time you make a shot, see if the basket is indeed sitting a bit out of the portafilter before you knock out the puck; if so, pressing it gently again the knockbox bar before knocking out the puck should be a workaround to keep things clean until you nail the cause.
