After all, if you serve up shit and I have to pay for it before I drink it, you do not deserve a second chance at making an effort. You should make an effort the first time.

Yes, I am a prick. Some will agree, some loathe. I will emphasize that I said particularly bad and not just an average pour.
I don't think your a prick Joel, just a bit of a dill.

Only if he sips from the back side of the cup, you know health regulations and all that stuff.

Assuming the barista is right handed, of course.

I've sent back a few times when I'm in a cafe I know that does the right thing....no probs, they're happy to oblige. If it's a run of the mill cafe, I drink tea. Once I bought a coffee at a bakery and watched this tap water pour into the cup...the girl was stunned when I just give her a look and said...no thanks...just left it there and walked out. Of course the shoe can be on the other foot, I was a bit rushed one day and I was making a lady a flat white, unfortunatley I got distracted and picked up the wrong jug and poured a stone cold flatty.....waitress picked it up by the saucer and off it went. Ooops......

No other profession has so much expectation and pressure placed on them for a $4 product.

Yeah you don't work in a cafe for the money, that is for sure; but that is largely to be expected in any business in which the aim of the game is to make a profit by selling really high volumes of a product at a low cost.

I must admit I tend never to return.

Eventually if enough people do this the business will run out of customers.

                  No customer no business.

I did have a waitress come and clear the table and ask if I had "enjoyed my coffee" I had drunk the than a tenth of it.

When I replied "no I hadn't" she seemed most offended and just took the cup away.

I suppose I was lucky I didn't get an earful of her wisdom and expertise.

I understand the sentiment he expresses but I think the extremity of the comment brings no change in the world - I'd rather drop the severity level back a bit and maybe get a change of performance.

The first step to resolving a problem is acknowledging it. Well done!

I've never returned one - too embarrassed. Here in the NT you are lucky to get coffee made with beans, let alone fresh ones. Most places have an automatic machine. Money in, sound effect that could be the sound of stale beans grinding, and it goes into an orange cup, topped by foamy long life milk (or powder). (you would know the ones if you have travelled the Stuart hwy) I'd rather drink nescafe than that stuff. Best coffee in town is the bakery.

So you either take what is available or wait until you get home. (the problem is being solved as a hand grinder + aeropress is on the way.

What does the barista do when you take it back? Taste it?

No... it was correct as www.coffeeKNOBs.com.au.

                            many many lols.

the only coffee i ever actually buy is from tafe in the mornings after i've got up at 5:30am, driven for 2.5 hours then sat in a lecture for another 2 hours.
they have a 2 group NS Appia, weapon of a machine but it's let down by the users. admittedly, none of the ladies there are trained on a machine so they do ok really, but i watched one lady make it, she dosed into the filter basket (some expensive grinder) and it went straight into the machine without any form of tamping at all. i was like, wat?

was going to say something but didn't want to seem self-important and i was tired. due to this technique, the coffee produced was pretty poor. not at all what that machine could do with a little more good technique behind it.
