  • Cannoli shells? Where can I get some?

    I hope this thread is coffee related enough....

    Where can I buy cannoli? I tried my local Coles, IGA and health food store to no avail. I looked at the websites for Coles and Woolworths and they dont seem to stock it. I also googled to no avail.

    Does anyone know where I can get some? My sister lives in Griffith (she works at De Bortoli) and she said that she might be able to get some at the local markets. There are loads of Italians in Griffith so you can pick up a lot of Italian products that you cant easily get in the rest of the state (approximately 60% of Griffiths population claim Italian background!). It is vintage seasoon in Griffith so my sis is working 12 hour 6 day shifts so she cant go to the markets to find out and I want my cannoli now!

    Anyone know of any online retailers or anything?

    Not at Brunettis....theyre going to be forced to close with rent at $440,000

      You wont find cannoli at Coles, Woolworths et al. Italian cafes and pastry shops sell them, or, you can make your own --- totally including the shells and filling, or, buying the shells and making your own filling.

        The old Brunettis was a favourite of mine for a coffee and patry during work on a Sunday morning.  The range of cakes, cannoli etc was mouthwatering and made choosing a pleasant chore.

        Then, they expanded.  Brunettis became an unwieldly coffee barn, take a number here, order coffee there, take your coffee and number over there for the cannoli....  

        It became way too big and noisy, too complicated to place a simple order.  Havent been back for years.

        Also, $60 a kilo for almond biscuits (probably 3X other places) was a little steep.

            If you want a recipe I can post it. They are easy to make - just a little time consuming

            I have recipes for both the custard filling and the ricotta filling if you want.

                Hi everybody, thanks for the quick replies. Im in the Blue Mountains but go to uni/work in the Sydney CDB. So I was hoping to get some in the CBD or find a place that will deliver.

                Im after the shells and will make my own filling. Five Dock and Leichhardt are a bit of a PITA to get to for me. TG do you know if they sell just the shells?

                Lucinda I would love to have that receipe if have time.

                    If you go into Penrith you can get Cannoli Shells from Harris Farm Markets in the Plaza (right near the Railway Station entrance). Not sure of the price though.

                      Usually continental delis will carry cannoli shells. Last box I saw was about $6.

                        Unfortunately my local delis dont stock them. Thanks Julsajet, that Penrith place sounds like it might be the goods! If that doesnt work out I will contact the places that TG listed above.

                          Cannoli Siciliani - Stefano dePieri
                          makes 25

                          25g castor sugar
                          zest 1 orange
                          300g plain flour
                          1 1/2 tb brandy or grappa
                          1 ts baking powder
                          1 1/2 tb olive oil
                          1 egg + 1 yolk (white reserved)
                          veg oil for frying
                          1 ts orange juice

                          filling
                          500g fresh ricotta
                          100g each dark choc, roasted almonds
                          80 g castor sugarcandied orange peel, chopped.
                          2-4 drops orange or lemon zest or oil.

                          Combine sugar, flour & baking powder.
                          Add egg & yolk and other ingredients and mix well.
                          Turn out and knead 4-5 mins to form a smooth dough.
                          Wrap and rest 1-2 hours before rolling.

                          If using a pasta machine, divide dough into 3 pieces. Press flat & dust with flour. feed through widest setting several times, dusting with flour & folding in 1/2 to feed through again.
                          If dough is too sticky or moist, dust with flour to absorb moisture, allowing dough to come through easily. ( if dough tears and looks rough - this may mean it is too damp or have tried to force through too much dough).
                          Continue until all dough has been fed through - repeat after lowering machine down one notch at a time until you reach the econd to last setting.
                          Pass through once at this width and rest pastry.
                          Using a round pastry cutter, cut disc to wrap metal or wooden cannolli rods to overlap by 1- 1.5 cm. Re roll scraps and continue until all dough has been used.
                          DUST DISCS AND STACK ON TOP OF EACH OTHER TO PREVENT DRYING OUT.
                          Grease cannoli rod, wrap a disc of pastry, brush with egg wash to seal overlapping ends.
                          Heat oil in deep pan to 175-180c(350f).
                          Cook cannoli 3-4 at a time until golden brown.
                          Remove and drain - allow rods to cool before re using.

                          FILLING
                          Beat ricotta until smooth, add sugar & orange oil.
                          Fold through chocalate, almonds and candies peel.
                          Fill canno;i with piping bag and large plain nozzle.
                          Garnish each end with small piece of candied orange peel.


                          You can get cannoli rods at any continental deli. Basically they are metal tubes.

                            The only place I know which as an entire aisle running the full length of the shop, with both left and right hand sides, dedicated to every conceivable pasta.

                            But for cheese: Mamma Lucia, Weston Street Brunswick. Its a factory with attached retail outlet. Best pecorino cheese, and a a steal at $8 kg (less than half price).

                            You have not tasted ricotta until you get theirs, steaming warm from the vat.  Nothing, nothing compares.
