  • Sorry no take aways!

Visited a cafe this morning in Western Suburbs Melbourne who got a great review in The Age Good Cafe Guide. I asked for two take away lattes and their response was ' sorry we are not doing take aways at the moment' WTF? have never heard that before is that normal? so we went next door who got a good review also, I'm glad I went!

Is it possible that they had run out of takeaway cups?

        I had the opposite problem.
Dropped in to a local cafe for a coffee with my elderly Mum.
Ordered a pot of tea for her and a long black for me.
Got mine in a cardboard cup.
(I hate take-away cups - rather drink it out of my boot)
Somebody didn't put brain into gear.

Not heard of that before, very strange. If anything I'd have thought it'd be the other way round (only doing takeaway).

I saw a bunch of hipsters who ordered takeaways but all sat in the cafe for an hour chatting.

I went to a place in Byron Bay not so long ago that was obviously under the pump and said, "how long for a takeaway coffee?"

To which they replied, "there's at least a half hour wait!"

I said, "you've got to be joking, right? You mean to tell me that you don't prioritise take away coffees?"

              To which they replied, "No!"

End of story: see you later, Susan !

I'm sorry, I don't understand. Why should they prioritise take away coffees? Both take the same amount of time to make, both are for customers that pay the same, so why should a take away coffee get priority. If anything, the customers that sit should get the better service, after all they may just order other things, or a second cup

                  And why should they???

If you were dining in a Thai restaurant and they kept prioritising take-away orders while you languished at your table, starving... would you be a happy camper?

Why should it be any different for coffee? If you must have a take-away coffee quickly then try going to a place less obviously "under the pump" or simply order ahead.

When I read this I see a different angle - lost business. Putting aside the fact that it's probably next to impossible to find and then keep decent staff in Byron, if that cafe had a decent barista and maybe a second person steaming and finishing during the rush, so they could pump out a coffee every 30-40 seconds, how much more money would they make because people would happily drink their coffee more quickly and order a second or even third. Not to mention not having to prioritise take aways.

That said, next time I'm getting a takeaway from Foxy Brown I'll be looking forward to my priority treatment! ;-)

Personally I think it's good business practice to have all takeaway coffees out within 4mins of ordering whenever possible and even when your getting slammed!

The way I see it that's about how long it takes to walk to the local train station and if you're on a tight schedule you want to be able to grab a cup of joe and make your train!

Try waking up earlier rather than damning others with your poor time management skills

Is anyone ever going to wait a half-hour for a coffee?
A local cafe in Yeppoon dropped this one on us last time we stopped for a coffee.
It was lunch time and all the primary school student staff were tied up doing lunches.
My jaw dropped - I had never heard that one before. I was tempted to say "how about you hire me for a half hour and I'll get all the coffees out".
Actually just occurs to me that I waited for almost 20 mins 'in-house' the last time I was there.
Note to self to avoid this outfit.
