A tamping station is something suggested recently by (I think it was) Yelta - going on the wife's shopping list for Xmas.

I don't think the different height has much to do with it - I'm fairly tall and tamp on the kitchen bench so angle of impact (so to speak) doesn't vary much. Also I am not tamping hard anyway - I dose and tamp 3 or 4 times as I fill the basket, but at way less than half the pressure advocated normally.

I find it gives a very even puck that normally doesn't even need a 'bang' to get it to flick out cleanly from the basket. Note that I was doing this before I got naked. And it is easier to do in the VST's because they don't have the sloped sides of the Sunbeam baskets.

do you have a tamping station you can use? where it may eliminate this theory? Im also guessing that it could also be that without the spouts, your naked PF lays lower onto the table to give you better leverage compare to the PF raised by 1-2" due to the spout? (long shot though )

I wish I can test it, but my machine doens't have a pressure gauge for the pump to show the difference

@Avex: That's about as close as I have come to a reason as well. Although I had been working quite a bit on my shots, changing how I dose and tamp, prior to getting naked. That's kinda what I referring to about the wobble, as it is the only thing I can think of that might have been removed from my technique.

My guess is that it could be that your basket is probably better distributed and tamped now with the flat bottom, so there is no channelling, eliminating any path of least resistance, increasing the pressure during extraction as a result.

I had a spare PF so I got a guy with a lathe to drill it out for me. Noticed an immediate improvement in my coffee, one part of which is still a mystery. The better coffee comes partly because I can see when I stuff it up and partly because when I tamp the PF sits flat - I used to have a single spout and I think no matter how much I tried to keep it level when tamping, it would wobble and give me uneven compression of grounds. (the puck surface was still level, but I think maybe I had pressure spots inside the puck)

And then my VST filters arrived and my coffee jumped another notch in bliss. With VST's and naked it is consistently a higher quality coffee in the cup, even with some pre-packed beans a friend bought for me instead of my local roaster's specials.

There's plenty of places that sell e61 naked PF's. CoffeeParts.com.au would be a good place to start.

    started a topic Naked portafilter

    Naked portafilter

I use a Lascala Butterfly and yesterday had a coffee made with a naked filter, the machine was also an E61 head type and the beans were roasted by me. The pour was brilliant so I am wondering if anyone else has experience with these portafilters and where I might get one.
Working...
