A local roaster sells beans through IGA - if I'm lucky, they can have stock which is less than a month since roast date (the roaster is a bit of a drive and closes way too early).
I have on occasion had decent milk-based results from Woolworths Select coffee beans.
I think if your coffee is a bit older, a Moka or similar will probably be more forgiving than espresso.
It's a shame there is no method for really preserving that just roasted quality of coffee for even 6 months. Even vacuum sealing only gets be a few days extra out of a batch.
I might start using my week+ old coffee to grind into little seperate vacuum sealed pouches for use with my Aeropress/Moka at work.

In light of the recent resurgence of interest in sugar as implicated in the "fat/cholesterol/coronary artery disease" issue, I have been reviewing my sugar consumption and there is no doubt that I eat a lot of the stuff.
Whilst I put little or no sugar in espresso coffee, I have always put a couple of teaspoons in a cup of black 'coffee-bag' coffee or dripolator coffee.
I have cut this down to one and it is amazing how quickly your taste adjusts to the reduced dose.

Yeah, mocha is my fallback if I need a caffeine hit and there isn't a decent cafe available. Sacrilege I know but sometimes you don't have the option of proper coffee...Originally posted by Bazooka View PostOrder mocha or flavoured latte ( i know i know), sugar will make it more pallatable
Last time I had sugar in my coffee (my morning cafe cocked up) I couldn't even taste the coffee, it just tasted like "flat and sweet".

Graham there are a few places for good coffee in Rocky and Maccas isn't one of them. The Rocky Sexie Coffie in Bolsover St. is still THE ONE.Originally posted by GrahamK View PostRecently took the Bonneville up to Townsville and back, and stayed in a few dodgy motels en route. I avoided the coffee provided in all of them, and also did the coffee bag thing (Robert Timms) in desperation. Found a few reasonable spots on the way as well however.
- Little Café round the back in Miriam Vale - did a reasonable coffee. (Fantastic compared to the 1 Macca's café one I tried in Rocky, which was foul and undrinkable)

- Just north of Proserpine there is a small coffee plantation that has a small Café. (Whitsunday Gold Coffee) - Good coffee & cake.

- Sexie Coffee on the highway near Maryborough. - very nice
Took my own coffee to use at my daughters place in Townsville.

I used to have a lot of difficult moments with friends offering me Instant.
After a while I started carrying Coffee Bags(which I find infinitely preferable to any Instant) with me everywhere.
I would say "Oh, sorry, Instant coffee has a bad effect on me (it does - it makes we want to puke!) but I've got some coffee bags in the car, I'll just get one".
Now my friends all have a box of coffee bags in the pantry (lovely people).

Oh Joy!
My WOW finally arrived.
I had visions (caffein-withdrawal-induced) of some Postal worker enjoying a brew on me.
(sorry Aust. Post for such unworthy thoughts)
Roll on morning-tea.

Desperado
For the first time the post failed me and my coffee order from Andy didn't arrive before the weekend.
(picture a forlorn Rocky standing hopefully at the front door every time a van comes up the street)
I had just enough left of the Harrar Longberry to make two coffees for Son & self on Saturday but come Sunday morning....
A scrounge of the downstairs fridge uncovered an almost full pack of Zaraffas ground for dripolator, left behind by my Daughter about 2 months ago.
Checked the grind - very coarse - so into the grinder for a re-work.
The pour looked a bit frightening with the first trickle very black but quickly lightening, prompting a decision to do the coffees as ristretto.
End result, a Latte, a Piccolo Latte, and a Macchiato. All surprisingly drinkable although without the depth and length that we have become used to with Andy's beans.
Anybody else had to drop their standards in an emergency?Tags: None
