  • Burnt tasting coffee

    Hi everyone

I cleaned the shower head last night (first time I have done this). My coffee this morning tasted very burnt the worst I have ever stated.

i assume this is probably due to my cleaning, eg some residue on the grouphead heating up, but just wanting to check there is nothing else I should do.

No change has been made to coffee batch or grinder.

    thanks

    Hey there budgie,

More than likely over extraction, meaning you may have ground too fine and/or dosed too much which results in hot water being in contact with the grounds for too long thus burning result.
How did the pour look.? Did it trickle very slowly?

As per the cleaning routine, pull a shot to ''season'' the portafilter, discard the shot, leave the portafilter and puck in place to warm up sufficiently, then simply knockout the puck, and you,re good to go.

It wasn't an over extraction. Tasted very burnt and as noted no adjustment to grinder or coffee. Coffee extracted as per normal.

If it was the 1st time to clean the showerscreen you might have changed the amount of water entering the filter. What did the screen look like? was it all brown and clogged?

So you could wind up with over-extraction due to having more water enter but rapidly compared to before.

Screen was surprisingly clean despite never being cleaned (I've had the machine for a year). I'll have a play around tomorrow,

Out of interest, did you do as Gary suggested and discard the first one or two shots?

            Mal.

What did you clean it with?

I forgot to also ask if every coffee you had after the cleaning tasted burnt, sporadically or just once?

                  Hy guys

so worked this out - on closer inspection the two lots of beans I'd roasted had a little oil on the surface giving the burnt taste. Tried some other beans and the taste went away, so not related to the shower screen at all.

at least I know now I prefer a lighter roast, I'm still new to roasting! Thanks all for your help.
