Thanks for sharing this information and great pictures. I'm wondering if I could reasonably expect to grow hedges of coffee plants in Melbourne.

Thanks. I have access to excellent processing facilities, though I do like working on small scale methods, eg: hulling bean. Use a dough making blade in a food processor to hall. To winnow chaff I use a large plastic bucket and leaf blower. Takes no time.
Yes, last year was a big flowering in this region so this year's crop has been good, with excellent ripening conditions. Flowering is occurring now for next year, and is looking good as well... So long as the hail keeps away.
I hear that some serious funding is going into new variety possibilities for Australian conditions. Keep an ear peeled. Australian coffee industry still has huge potential.

They are amazing plants, and make great tall hedges! A friend planted a non-specific store bought variety and now has a wild copse in his yard that he harvests and roasts each year. Tastes pretty good too. Coffee grows like a weed in Australia, we all should be growing more.
Your friends beans look fantastic.

Aussie Coffee... wildside
I had one of the best times of my life in October when a friend told of how his coffee trees were overloaded this year. He lives in a community near Nimbin. The trees were first planted thrity years ago with some of the originals still there - over twenty foot! He is a bone carver with disability now so they don't usually pick each year. They did clear the undergrowth around them though They gave me open slather and I got most of what was there of about fifty trees - red cattui variety. Cattui is a very prolific bearer and the good years are mindblowing. Hand picking is really enjoyable. There are plenty of these rogue small plantations around. I reckon with a small team I could pick a tonne of DGB each year, depending on conditions.
