  • How to process home grown beans

    Hi All
Had a quick sercah and couldnt find what i was after.
But a friend gave em these beans to roast.
What is the process of getting the "shell" of the green bean.
Is there anything else to do apart from de-shelling?
    Thanks

No - you just need to remove the husks, which is called hulling. If that is all you have, in terms of amount of beans, then you could just use your fingers, tiresome, but effective. An alternative is to use a "kitchen wiz" type thing with a plastic blade. I use an adapted manual meat grinder, it works but not the best. Proper mechanical hullers are not cheap, so only cost effective if you have kilo's of them to do. It is best to keep them in the hull until just before roasting if you can, so that's a good thing.

    have fun.

      Great thanks
I kept reading and found a bit of more info. I borrowed a food processor and broke one of the plastic blades - don't you love that!
Anyway, finished the job and looking forward to the results. Thanks.
