I always think a good shot - single or double - with a little milk - doesn't matter whether it is hot or cold - is one of the best coffee experiences available.
A couple of years ago I introduced a friend to the Piccolo Latte and I always remember the look of sheer pleasure on his face when he took the first sip.

Aaaah! They're coming out of the woodwork!
gibberblot, you're right about the shock. It LOOKS hot, and because it's full and freshly made, you expect it to be hot. Good observation.

I tried this yesterday. Quite nice. It tastes a bit like an iced coffee, but not so sugary.
It was a weird experience though. Despite pouring the cold milk in and then fully expecting a different flavour, as soon as it touched my lips I got a shock that it wasn't hot

I also like to lightly steam my milk sometimes so its just off cold and pour about 60ml of milk on top of a double espresso - for a very similar effect!

You're preaching to the converted Gonzo...
I think a lot of us have been doing this, or something very close to it for a long time.
Freshly made coffee is great, no matter the style of its consumption...

L'ambiente - a new way of serving coffee
I love espressos, but they have to be HOT.
I also like iced coffee, but it has to be cold.
I think I've fixed my extreme-ism by creating this new coffee. I'm calling it "l'ambiente".
Method:
Get a nice coffee cup, about 150ml.
Don't warm the cup
Drop in an espresso doppio
Top up with COLD milk.
Ecco l'ambiente!
It's amazing. It's room temp, so it can't get hot or cold, and it brings out the subtleties of the espresso flavour without drowning it in milk.
