Hey all,
Im laid up at home with a cold, so thought Id take this opportunity to post an update on my progress so far.
In the few short weeks since finding this forum, I have purchased the following equipment; Rancilio Silvia, Sunbeam EM0480 grinder, Breville Crazy Popper and an X1 heatgun from Bunnings... oh and last, but certainly not least, a starter pack of green beans from the BeanBay! This sure isnt an inexpensive hobby to get into, but the ongoing costs are relatively cheap and the enjoyment factor so far has been immense.
The evening of the great Silvia unboxing, I think I poured twenty or thirty shots before finally getting a decent espresso. Since that night, things have only gotten better
I have roasted and tasted samples from each of the four green beans in the sample pack, and boy are they great! Ive had about 10 guests sample my coffee, and each one of them has been amazed at how good the coffee is - most are a little bemused when I tell them I roasted it myself! I dont think my coffee is yet as great as it could be, but it is getting better very quickly.
My favourite bean so far has been the Indian Tiger Mountain, followed closely by the Peru Segunda and My Sore Nuggets (that name gets quite a chuckle from my friends ;D). I have roasted most of the beans using my Crazy Popper, but have done one batch using my heatgun, wok and whisk... I think this method resulted in a better roast, but the Crazy Popper is super easy so Ill keep using it for smaller batches.
I wanted to thank everyone on this board for all of the informative posts and friendly suggestions. I havent posted a lot, but Ive read lots of the archived threads and have learned more in a few weeks than i would have thought possible. I hope to continue learning and hopefully contribute a little more as well.
Cheers,
