Aaand? even in tiny little port douglas, if you're an espresso snob there is relief for your cravings. Origin espresso. Magnificent. Top notch. A whizz bang new slayer machine, an e-doserless mazzer robur grinder. A roastery next door. No need to "do without" while visiting FNQ. IMHO origin espresso could stand on its own in any big cosmopolitan city.

Sigh... The 15 1/2 hour flight from Los Angeles to Syd with almost no sleep combined with over caffeination (because I wasted too much tolerance on other places That were not recommended. So Reuben hill was the only one we made it to in our one day in Sydney. The shot was super bright as promised and very nice. Not so many american espresso joints push the brightness envelope quite as hard.... Some... But not many. Fell asleep at 7pm watching the windies playing sri Lanka. Caught our flight to cairns at 9am next morning. Its Sunday morning now and industry one is closed but looks amazing. We will definitely go there on this trip. Just finished brekkie at chill cafe palm cove. Had a single origin Guatemala that was most excellent. Super bright like I like without any under extracted notes (or hardly any, it was quite edgy). Lovely. Thinking of taking the Batista class at industry one.

Peter, please keep the reports coming through. Always good to get a different (even global) perspective.

OK reuben hill. Made the mistake of ordering a large espresso. Its too big. Served in a teacup... Full. I think it might be what we yanks call an americano. Which is espresso with hot water added. Wifey had a flat white and a bowl of bean stew which was world class.
Aha! Just talked to the server and she believes I got a flat black. She is bringing me a proper shot now.

Also Paramount Coffee Project isn't too far away either which is worth checking out, they are on Commonwealth St, Surry Hills.....They feature different roasters so there is usually a selection of several different coffees to sample & multiple brew styles.

I don’t know about the coffee at the Novotel but I have had good coffee nearby at Mecca, near the ABC, on the corner of Harris St and Ultimo Rd.

Peter,
Enjoy the Sydney coffee.
Generally I find the worst coffee in Sydney is in the touristy spots where they can sell dishwater in coffee cups to the unlimited supply of unwary customers, while at the bottom of the office towers they have to make good coffee to keep the regular customers coming back.

Pains me too about Melbourne. I may be a yank but I spent my schoolboy years there (lived in Kooyong, walked to Scotch College). It was a great time in my life.Originally posted by Jonathon View PostIt pains me to say it as a proud Melburnian, but Sydney is kicking our ass at the moment when it comes to great new cafés. If we're including Sydney CBD then you can add Gumption (same crew as Coffee Alchemy), Marlowe's Way, Vella Nero and Ju Ju Espresso...
... forgot that you like bright single origins, Mecca might be up your alley as well.

I was in Sydney last week and was knocked out by the standard of service and coffee at "Workshop Espresso" in George St CBD opposite the Queen Victoria Building.
At morning tea time the cafe was marked out by a traffic-jam of about 20 customers blocking up the footpath. I said to the wife "This is clearly THE place".
It was. I grabbed one of about 6 stools along the wall and within seconds had a glass of cold lemon/herb water in front of me and in less than a minute my Macchiato and Portuguese Tart was served and my glass refilled.
Macchiato was ristretto and was excellent.

Thanks guys. I do like bright SO's... My favorite style of espresso.
And especially good news I can get a fix in cairns. It's small enough I had written it off for a possibility of good espresso.
