Nespresso advertising at Melbourne Central

I tried a few free coffees at this Nespresso stand at Melbourne Central. They are showing different capsule type machines. I tried coffees from this Nespresso DeLonghi machine they said cost over $800 (or maybe over $900, I can't remember). The first two were revolting and the third coffee was drinkable but still not worth the price tag of the Nespresso machine.

I took a picture on my iPhone of the Nespresso DeLonghi machine my free coffees came from. How do I upload it to this thread?

I can't get over how they can sell these revolting coffee pod Nespresso pieces of shiny junk. I'm not a coffee connoisseur but if I spend that much on a coffee machine I want a really nice coffee.

At least I didn't pay for those coffees. They gave them to me in small plastic transparent cups.

Most people I know that have the pod machines get them for ease of use, convenience, cleanliness etc. They often ask me how I can be bothered making a coffee on my machine when they witness the process and time involved compared to a capsule. Horses for courses I guess.

Some people like the convenience of being able to whack a lump of frozen food into the microwave as well, but give me fresh produce and I will happily take my time making a mess of the kitchen and ending up with something worthy of eating. To me the time, the mess and the cleaning up are all part and parcel of doing it right and of enjoying life to the fullest.

My Breville Aroma Style, Aroma Style Electronic | Breville, cost lest than $100 and I swear it makes nicer coffee than what I tasted from that Nespresso machine (that cost around $800 to $900).

$900? We have one at work that was only $250-300.

To be fair, I think the coffee is ok. The cafes within a minute of my office aren't much better, and for that I need fork out $4 and 15 mins.

What we have to remember is that most people aren't coffee snobs. Nespresso capsules make better coffee than most people would on our setups that cost thousands. I also heard rumours of local roasters packing their beans in those capsules.

TampIt is working with a roaster(?) in Perth to pack fine coffee into capsules - he swears you can get good coffee from them if you do it right.

Personally I got to use a number of different pod machines while touring schools doing computer work - I ended up putting a bottle of Moccona in my bag for places too far from a café - it made a much better coffee than any of the pods.

The use of coffee pods and capsules has greatly expanded in recent years as many people want to drink better than instant coffee with little initial cost. Also cleaver promotion by Nestles has been very successful in expanding their market.

It is similar to the computer printer market where the producer makes little out of the machine but mountains of profit out of the consumables. While many capsule machines sell for a little over $200. The coffee in some capsules costs over $100 per kilo. Andy sells much of his top roasted coffee for about $35 per Kg and many of us buy our unroasted green beans from Andy for about $12 per Kg.

I have sampled coffee made from capsules or pods when they were demonstrated about 5 times without enjoying any of them. I will stick to my coffee made in my Breville Dual Boiler with my home roasted coffee or sometimes drink coffee at cafes where they know what they are doing. Otherwise I will drink water, tea, beer or red wine.

I had a Nespresso machine for a fair while. The coffee was never quite right. I kept choosing new pods thinking I just hadn't found the one I liked yet. Turns out there isn't one I really like, plus the milk frother was never hot enough. It was better than instant but not a patch on the Lelit I ended up buying which does a better job than a lot of cafes. I would recommend people do a taste test with Nespresso coffees if given the chance and thinking about buying one of their machines.

Look, if I sample a Nespresso coffee that I actually really like I might then consider buying a Nespresso machine. It's just been the case I haven't been impressed with any Nespresso coffee I've tried so far.

You're having a giraffe There is no way that Moccona instant coffee is comparable to Nespresso.

The daughter in law has just purchased a Nespresso and it makes quite a decent latte imho.

I own 2 Nespresso Citiz & Milk's that I bought broken to repair. RRP of about $300 apparently. I tried the so-called strongest pod and it was ok I guess, better that instant and probably better then what most people make on an entry level espresso machine with little experience.
Milk frother is also easy to use and heated the milk to a good temperature. I think I measured it and got about 58-60C from fridge temperature milk.

What I do like most of all about the Nespresso machines, perhaps it's just DeLonghi's but I imagine the Breville's would be more or less the same, is the build quality, fit and finish and ease of service. They build the thermoblock onto a small tray that slides out, added small cutouts in the plastic so you can reach hose clips and connections easier and the PCB is mounted inside a plastic shell that protects from most water spraying. It's also out of the direct path of any water that may drip if a leak develops.

This, I think, may be what drives part of the retail price up. I've seen much more expensive machines that you would expect this level of build quality from that just disappoint.

My job involves visiting a lot of clients, most who have some sort of pod machines, most of them lower end Nespresso or the Aldi machines. Based on what I've had, I could never recommend one to a friend or family member.

On Friday night I was in the city and popped into the Nespresso store to see what the fuss was all about, and I was pleasantly surprised. For coffee that wasn't freshly ground it wasn't a bad cup of coffee. Bearing in mind, this was their $800+ top of the range machine, was their display machine (so has to be kept in tip top pristine condition since this is what they're trying to sell) and was made by someone whose sole job is to sell this machine.

I guess it is possible to get decent coffee out of them, but I've never had one from a sub $500 machine and there's better manual machines for around the same money and me personally, grinding beans (as well as buying beans, and discussing coffee with my roaster) and brewing the coffee myself is all part of the experience. I see my friends on Facebook raving about the Aldi machines, but I suspect these people don't appreciate fine tasting coffee.

I have mentioned this in another thread, but incase you missed it or for anyone considering a pod system , Nespresso USA have just launched a new process and capsule system totally different to the existing one.
Called the "virtuoline", the capsules are bigger and vary in volume for different blends ( up to 15+gms in some ) .
The extraction process is different so you may expect "different" results in the cup.

I dont know if these units are available in Oz yet, but i cannot see them completely changing the system if it doesnt make a better coffee ?
