  • Has coffee made you a Magpie?

Had reason to go through my things today looking for some bits that were misplaced. And as I picked up parts and relocated them to a single location I realised just how much extra stuff I have collected. My justification is I can't really afford a new machine any time soon so I need to make sure I have the parts needed to keep my current hardware running.

I've got a drawer of parts I have collected to fix problems that later turned out to be my process. I have 2 collars, one brand new the other from a 'spare' machine, 4 x blue seals, a new steam pump, a new main pump, some smaller bits (relays, diode) for things that might fail electrically...

I bought the blue seals because I had leakage happening from the top of the group, near as I could tell - I wasn't sticking my head under there with boiling water spraying out! The new seal didn't fix the problem so I put the old one back on then bought a new collar. While I was waiting for that I found that following SB's advice re dosing wasn't wise - way too much coffee in the basket - and as soon as I reduced the dose to the ~right levels the leakage went away. i.e. dosing to the 5-cent test is an overdose for the SB machine.

If anyone wants dual floor baskets I have 2 x both single and double. I also have 2 each of the single floor with 1 x double being for the decaf set up.

I also have a 15g VST basket in my naked PF and a 22g VST I use in the SB PF when I'm doing 2 x visitor coffees.

And I now have 3 x grinders, 2 x EM0480 and 1 x EM0450. The 450 is decaf, 1 480 is for my normal beans and 1 480 is for variety. I currently have a beldn home roast from Wimmera, some PNG SO medium roast and some Costa Rica medium roast to vary with my dark roast Divina.

What extras have you got because of coffee?

As a Hawthorn member, not even a lifetime supply of Blue Mountain could turn me into a Magpie...

(You did mean the pies, didn't you?)

I meant in the collection of coffee stuff. (the birds like to collect things) Just seems I started with a machine and a grinder and now I'm filling drawers with extras.

It did for a while, but over the last few months I have narrowed down what I really enjoy using and in doing that moved on much of the collection.

I am generally very much a minimalist, but I just see all the items i collected as part of my learning, checking things out and getting more interested in things coffee.

Now I can relax, chasing the ever moving and often elusive perfect roast / brew.

I'm more a collector of Tiger stripes, so not a Magpie....

Having said that, my birthday next week may see me with an enlarged collection of bits 'n' pieces, yes.

I like what the more technically minded/ practical/ handy people on here do with or to their equipment in order to improve their coffee. Looks scary to me, but admire those who get results with old bits 'n' pieces.

After watching them absolutely destroy Carlton, it's a great day to be a Magpie!

But... to answer your question... yes.

With respect JM, , if that is all you have, you are a lazy magpie !
                Only one espresso m/c ?
                Only 3 grinders.. ?
A true "Coffee Magpie" would have several shiney m/c's stood available on display, together with a matching number of grinders, milk jugs of all shapes and sizes, a few roasting options ( + a bean stash hidden away), multiple thermometers, scales, baskets , tampers etc etc
...not to mention all that other stuff boxed and stored from the last "culling" of gear..
                . .. Ooohhhh...I think i may need help !...

I'm new to this and broke... what can I say? I forgot 2 thermos and about to buy some more accurate scales. Kitchen ones are only accurate to 1g. Only 2 milk jugs. Oh... and a SB tamper that never gets used now I have my Pullman one.

I'd be happy to take some of your shiny's off your hands so you have room to buy new ones...
