      My puck-prep workflow:

      1. Finger tap the sides of portafilter for horizontal distribution
      2. Gently knock portafilter on a tamping stand for vertical distribution
      3. A few spins with a leveler tool (OCD-like). I don't apply any downward pressure, the weight of the tool is sufficient. I stop spinning when it sits on the lip of the basket.
      4. I tamp relatively hard (10 KG?) with a self-leveling tamper.

Done. I almost never have channeling issues. And no, I don't WDT.

I use a normcore tamp with 25lb pressure. Since I'm new to the game, I figured the tamp would reduce a lot of user error, which it certainly has. The tamp that comes with the BDB is horrible in comparison.

I am a fan of the normcore but wanted a little more travel depth and one hand operation so went for the happy tamper - bit pricey but very ergonomic and delivers smooth pressure.

You could always go with a Puqpress Mini ... if you had the bench space.... and the spare $900 😁
