  • Best place in Melbourne to..

I'm new to Melbourne and pretty new to Espresso. Would like to find a shop where I can look at and purchase different espresso equipment (tampers, and such) and fresh beans. Where would I find such a place? I'm located in Prahran, VIC.

Also, where can I find a good list of the best local cafes? Do you have any personal suggestions? I love my local cafe (Two Dudes on Malvern/Williams in Prahran) but would like to try other good ones too!

    Thanks,
    Ryan

My first stop would be to use the CoffeeSnobs Site Sponsors Quote link found near the top of every page to contact all of our sponsors at once. Those who have what you want will contact you with their details.

I'm more interested in just browsing through a store to see what accessories I'd like. I'd like to support a local shop (which might not be a sponsor) than order online from site sponsors.

Ryan in Prahran you will find no better place than Marketlane coffee in the Prahran market, If you haven't been there yet you are missing out.
They also sell fresh beans roasted on site or there is another place by the meat section of the market but I can't vouch for their beans or coffee.

diode, Thanks! I've been to the other place in the market by the meat section, but I haven't been to Marketlane yet. That will be my Saturday morning coffee tomorrow. I appreciate the suggestion!

Not sure if I can say this but Chris from Talk Coffee is just North of Fitzroy and is well worth a visit to ogle and discuss equipment.

Make sure you also order the bread and jam on a Saturday morning...Really good

There is also The beanery in Emporium that has a range of machines and accessories next time you are in the city.

Who said anything about ordering online? Since when does connecting with a business online mean they don't have a brick and mortar store? You asked for information on local stores you could go to to browse and I gave you a way to find one or more.

There is at least one sponsor who has a brick and mortar store with a large showroom and selection of everything you asked about in the area you requested information on who would no doubt have quickly replied to your request. Seeing as they're ~10km from you it's quite possible that you could already have been to the store, played with the toys there, had all your questions answered, bought everything you wanted, and be back home enjoying all your new goodies if you had filled out the form with all of your requirements and submitted it instead of assuming your post/requirements wasn't/weren't understood.

Javaphile, are you always so unfriendly with the newbies? I'm part of many forums and people are generally friendly and welcoming. What gives?

I did check out the site sponsors quote form, but I can't imagine many people use this method to find things when, like me, they're just looking to browse around and talk coffee, possibly buy some accessories. What would you suggest I put in the "Budget" or "category" required fields? Instead of heading out to browse Talk Coffee or Beanery I just wait for a reply from the one brick and mortar store in my area.

Wouldn't it save even more time if you'd just told me which sponsor it was that's 10km away? Maybe you'd be sending them some business that way

Unfriendly? You appeared to have made unfounded and incorrect assumptions in re one of my posts (That none of our sponsors are both local to you and have brick and mortar stores.) so I gave additional information to clear that up.

What would you suggest I put in the "Budget" or "category" required fields?
How about the equipment you're interested in/considering buying and the price range you're considering paying?

Instead of heading out to browse Talk Coffee or Beanery I just wait for a reply from the one brick and mortar store in my area.
When you make a post or send an email do you sit there and do nothing else with your life until you receive a response? How is submitting the form any different? How do you know there's only one sponsor in your area? Another incorrect assumption as there is in fact more than one sponsor in the Melbourne area with a brick and mortar store.

Wouldn't it save even more time if you'd just told me which sponsor it was that's 10km away?
What would save more time, my mapping out all the sponsors (I don't live in Melbourne.), then typing out all their names, their distance from you (Where do I stop? How far away do you consider local?), and how to contact them or you taking a minute to fill out the form including in the Details or Other field "I'm looking for a brick and mortar store within XX km's from ABC.".
